Hello all!
Well I finally took the plunge and decide to get my girl speyed I had been deciding wether to get her done for the last 4 years!!! she is a 7 yo GSD. What made me decide on doing it was that she has got a small lump on the leg that has doubled in size over the last 2 months and that a friends dog recently had pyo!
Well this morning she went in for the op, I opted for her to have blood tests before to see if everythings working correctly.........
I got a phone call few hours after dropping her off to say she wont be able to have the op today, the test showed that her liver isnt working properly!!! one of the things measured is suppose to be under 100 and Kia's was 300!!!! and the other part was 150! when it should be under 100 too! the vets really dont know whats wrong with her, she is showing no signs of anything wrong, nothing has changed. She is going in next week for another blood test so untill then im sat here worring like mad! Im so worried I have barely stopped crying all day!
I dont know why im posting this, I dont know what advice anybody can give me? I just feel in complete shock shes such a healthy dog :-(
im so so sorry to hear this i also have the same breed as you ,i carnt give any advise but im sending you loads love love to you and your girl ,i hope vets can find out why this is happening and it gets sorted very soon (((hugs))) xx
Hopefully if there is anything to find you will have caught it early .
Why do you have to wait for so long for a blood test ?

I dont have to wait long, they do in house bloods so they do it right then and there, Ive got to wait a week to see if theres any changes. Sorry I didnt explain very well.

My vet surgery offers blood tests for over 7 year old dogs when they go in for their boosters. They do it much more cheaply than normal, and it's to see if there are any underlying problems before they become apparent.
I know the test is offered when any age dog goes in for surgery, but I get my dogs blood tested annually after 7 years. On more than one occassion it has shown the start of problems. Liver with one. Kidneys with another. Thyroid with another.
It meant that I could review feed etc, and with the one, start thyroid treatment. So please don't panic. Be glad that it has shown up changes, and that you can respond when the problem is known. It DOESN'T mean that you are going to lose your dog. :-)

There are so many things that can cause this sort of result with the liver functions its amazing. We helped a 14 yr old bitch whos old vets had said her hair loss was down to a skin problem rife within our breed - rubbish poor animal was suffering constant dire - rear with their treatment. Her owner had a knee replacement asked us to take her to our own vet who knows the breed whilst she was holidaying with us. I told him what I suspected having suffered with cushings myself, he agreed, tests were inconclusive but pointed towards the disease. Her liver results were frightening ie over 6 thousand instead of the more normal 60 - 80 vet was shocked let alone us, treatment was started to stablise her liver then to treat the cushings within 2 mths she had a coat, no dire rear, pot belly gone but still horrific liver results.
Once her owner was recovered and the bitch had stabilised enough for surgery they removed her bad teeth - she was a rescue animal- last blood test 3 wks post extractions liver results are good enough for the drug therapy to be stopped with only Cushings treatment ongoing. We really thought she was going to die her condition was so poor yet the old madam is running around like a pup and in looove with our 15 1/2 yr old male who thinks he's in with a chance too - deluded old fools the pair of them lol.
Try not to worry too much its amazing what dogs can withstand and right without intervention from Vets, ours have put this old girls liver numbers down to toxics from the roots of her teeth being rotten a clean turned into 9 extractions. Good luck with next wks tests

Kiger lots of hugs and kissess,I will keep fingers crossed that whatever it is can be sorted early and that she will be fine.
Do keep us informed thing of you

Thanks everyone so much, all these replys do mean a lot to me.
I may just be worrying about nothing, I do hope I am, but after this im definalty going to have blood tests done often!
I think its just really shocked me, shes such a healthy dog...well so I thought! shes in amazing condition, really fit, happy dog. She means so much to me, all my pets do but she is the one who means that little bit more, she is such an amazing dog. Im going to try not even think about the test next week, just cross that bridge when I get to it :-)
what an amazing story about the dog! im so glad she is well :-)

John Goodyear is the vet treating her and has been amazed at the recovery, we all wished we'd taken photo's of her last summer at her worst barely any coat, thick scaley skin, terrible dire-rear and ready for the big sleep. Now she has an amazing coat, is as lively as anything, I should know have to catch the old fool when we collect her, is a good weight, owner going great guns on keeping that under control.
This girl is the world to her elderly owner and all at the warden controlled bungalows where she lives, has a walker take her out, owner still not walking unaided I'm afraid, has a groomer once a mth for her bath, owner is soo happy she's got her girl back again worth every penny as you can imagine at her age no insurance company would cover her.
Does make you realise just what amazing creatures they are, so sick yet still played with our old man last summer!

Thanks so much everyone its really nice of you all.
> Why do they think her levels were so off the first time round?
They said her levels being alot higher could of been caused by a slight liver infection or she could of damaged it by knocking it when shes jumped or even just twisted funny and its caused an injury to it. There was no signs of anything wrong with her, I am definalty getting blood tests done at least once a year from now on. Im so glad shes ok, shes means everything to me :-)

> I am definalty getting blood tests done at least once a year from now on
I have had it pinpoint problems with 3 dogs - early stages, and no noticeable signs. Worth it for me!
It is something I have done routinely with the booster now.

Kia is feeling much better today :-) trying my hardest to stop her running around! its such hard work keeping all four paws on the ground! if I go out of the room even for a minute when I come back in shes running around playing with Tiger! he was so good yesterday he knew straight away somthing was wrong with her, he sat by her all eve trying to protect her from the cat, poor cat she only wanted to cuddle up to Kia like normal :-)
AWWW bless ,so glad everythings good with kia now :) xx

> trying my hardest to stop her running around!
I recognise that one. When my second Bearded Collie was spayed, and I was told that she had to be on lead for 10 days, it was a nightmare.
The only guaranteed remedy would have been to nail all 4 feet to the floor!

Its so hard! shes desperate to play with Tiger! :-) he keeps bringing toys to her to play with him. Would help so much if I could nail all four paws down! We have a small wall in our garden, when shes been for a wee she runs back into to the house jumping over the wall! its about 4ft high!!! :-O Ive had to put all my plant pots on there so she can jump over!
Shes healing really well the cut is looking really neat, and shes not been trying to lick it too much, shes not been left alone at all since op though so will see how it goes tomorrow, she will only be alone for about an 2 hours.

You can't do any more than you are doing. I think we can all appreciate how difficult it is with an active dog.
Good Luck. :-)
