Advice please.

Mum is 45 days pregnant, i have been trying to worm her since day 39 using panacur 10 % with no luck she will eat her food without it no problem she is being fed on royal canin with tinned meat mixed in, i have tried chicken mixed with wet food, fish etc no luck.

one way would be to syringe it into her mouth can  be a bit messy but it works
- By jedona [gb] Date 22.11.09 16:18 UTC
use the primula cheese in a tube and squirt some onto the tablet so it is fully coated , bet she wont refuse that !!!!
or squash it into a cube of cheese

Tried this, she spat it out. :-(
- By Brainless [gb] Date 22.11.09 16:55 UTC
I syringe it down, or add to a little milk

Day 46 today, when is it safe to worm till?
- By white lilly [gb] Date 22.11.09 21:27 UTC
i think its 3days post whelp ?
- By frenchy [gb] Date 22.11.09 22:02 UTC
take the top of a cocktail sausage and poke the tablet inside and place the top back on, they normally eat it quickly without realising :-)
- By cocopop [gb] Date 22.11.09 22:05 UTC
syringe then immediately give something really tasty so she doesn't have time to think about it :-)

> poke the tablet inside

Panacur is in liquid, looks like milk of magnesia.

I start my pregnant bitches at day 40 until 2 days post whelping.

The best way I've administered it, is to poach white fish in milk and water, and squirt the Panacur 10% into it.  Probably the milk helps to take the taste away!  Although I am told by my vet that it tastes chalkie, so I don't know why we have so much difficulty getting it down them!  :-(

If I really can't get them to take it, like Barbara, I syringe it into their mouths, a bit at a time, so we don't lose any!

For those giving advice on tablets - it is the liquid that is licensed for use on pregnant bitches, and I would never use anything other than Panacur 10% suspension on a pregnant bitch.
- By frenchy [gb] Date 23.11.09 15:02 UTC
sorry, i read elsewhere it was a table, yes fully understand panacur liquid for pregnant bitches :-)
- By LoisLane Date 23.11.09 16:16 UTC
Thank you all for your tips.

I thought i was on to a winner last night with the fish, she eat the whole lot, and kept going back to lick the bowl, then she was sick. Won't touch any food today except chunks of carrot!
- By LoisLane Date 24.11.09 18:32 UTC
Quick update. I have used up almost a whole bottle of wormer and she has not taken any!! I am having to buy some more tomorrow, she will eat bits here and there but only what she wants, sliced chicken, carrots and chews, nothing i can use to disguise it. I have tried milk as well, i am running out of ideas :-(

Try a different wormer?? A tablet form? Not sure which though as I use the liquid.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.11.09 21:37 UTC

> Try a different wormer??

Only Panacur is licensed for use in pregnant bitches.  Just syringe it down.  Unless the breed is huge it isn't a lot to get down, my 20kg dogs it is 5ml per day so a teaspoonful.
- By Mooster Date 24.11.09 22:13 UTC
.............I had Panacur but it was in a sachet and it was a white powder which was really easy to mix in with the food - all got eaten up without the bitch realising - brilliant result! Wormed from day 40 thru to day 63.(which was infact 3 days post whelp!)
- By LoisLane Date 25.11.09 16:25 UTC
I am going to give it another go today :-), she is such a pain and tends to spit it out when i put it down her throat, if i fail i will ring and ask if a vet nurse could have ago.

A spoon  of natural yoghurt with a little honey mixed in may just be to much temptation for her to refuse.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 25.11.09 17:24 UTC
not sure if this is right ! but i read that honey should never be given if a bitch is in whelp ?
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 25.11.09 18:43 UTC
???? Not sure where you have read that but a small quantity of honey mixed with natural yoghurt will be fine. Although I should have said that honey from a health food shop would be better than the processed so called honey from the supermarket.
Pregnant women can also have honey however it should not be fed to babies under 12 months old.

i wish i could remember :( but thanks for clearing that up for me :)

> she is such a pain and tends to spit it out when i put it down her throat,

Just take longer!   Patience is the key.  Tiny, tiny bit at a time.

I wormed my bitch with Pancur liquid.  We found putting the liquid in her bowl and crumbling a tea biscuit over it worked.  Always done it before her meals so she was hungry.
- By LoisLane Date 27.11.09 16:35 UTC
On day 50 today, and have finally managed to get the first dose of wormer in her, she was wrapped in a towel so she couldn't fuss, im not saying it was easy this way but really helped. Thanks to all who posted advice. Am i right in thinking i need to do the same for the next two days? Or is it everyday till post whelp.

Lois

Hi i used milbimax when my bitch was pregnant, one tablet so easy
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.11.09 22:56 UTC
I don't believe it is licensed for pregnancy though, so I wouldn't use anything but a wormer specifically for pregnancy.
- By zane0305 [gb] Date 28.11.09 10:47 UTC
I was worried about giving it,but i rang them up to confirm it was safe and questioned my vet about it and they both said it was fine to use
- By Christine Date 28.11.09 19:40 UTC
It says Milbemax can be used for breeding &lactating bitches B/L :)
