I'm on my own this Christmas (husband away in Military), and although I'll be seeing my Mum and brother & co in the evening, I've decided that I'd rather be of help to somebody than watch tv all day. It's quite a scarey prospect to do something so different at Christmas but at the moment it's what I feel.
I've thought of the Salvation Army, and I'll chat to a couple of local charities, but just wonder if you can think of anywhere else. I'm sure the 'big' charities have lots of volunteers but maybe some of the lesser known ones struggle. Wilts/Berks/Oxon sort of areas - I don't mind travelling 20(ish) miles.
It might not happen, I find Christmas emotional and I might just want to curl up in a sad little ball and eat sweets.

Our old HR lass is on her own most of the time and works in some sort of food serving place for the homeless on Xmas day. She loves it so much. She actually counts down her days to that.

What a lovely idea!

As your OH is in the military, had you thought about giving Headley Court a call?   There will be guys there who won't be able to get home for Christmas/or whose families won't be able to visit them ... they might be glad of a volunteer or two!

Not too far from you, I think!

You could try Crisis at Christmas they are after volunteers to help out with homeless people http://www.crisis.org.uk/

I love the Salvation Army and all they do.
If it wasn't that they are tee total I'd look more closely.
You are doing something brilliant by giving up your day, and I wouldn't mind betting you too will have a fantastic time.

Karen :)

There is an article here about working with Crisis as a volunteer dog handler.  This enables homeless people to get much needed respite and care for their canine pals.  This was last year in London but there might be something similar in your local largish town.

Alternatively you could ask at at your local rescue centre if they want some extra support

A friend of mine volunteers to help feed the homeless in Manchester every year.  She says it's the most rewarding thing she's ever done and that everyone should do it at least once (like Jury service), she says it should be compulsory!

Isnt there a night shelter? most big cities have one we do here in Winchester.
Scouts deliver stuff at Christmas and volunteers serve xmas lunch?? Try your local district council they will give you a number - or local church will probably.
