Hi guys
I was wondering if anyone out there can help or point me in the right direction

My gran who is 91 has pored her heart out to me yesterday that she had a brother who died in the world war 2 and she only had a little information on him and her mother would never speak about him or what had happened.  She has asked me if I could help find out any information i can about him and his time in the Royal Marines.

I have traced that there is a mermorial in in plymouth with his name on and would also like to see if there is any pictures anywhere showing the mermorial and the name printed so I could show her. (Plymouth Naval Mermorial)

I have found out on genes reunited what unit he was in, the year of death and also which page and vol of the war death reports in which it is published.

Im a bit lost as to where I can look now or on the other hand what information would be available to her.  She was keen to see if she could look at any of his file from when he was in the marines to try and find out what he did and what sort of person he was, and also how and where he died?

Being 91 and not in the best of health I really want to get her as much information as I can.

Hope someone can help

You could try the 'Commonwealth War Graves Commission' as they should have records. It might also be worth e.mailing Plymouth council and/or the Plymouth Tourist Information Centre as they would know of any local history groups.

Do you mean WWI?  Cos your gran would have been between 21-27 during WW2 and she doesn't remember him?  If it was WWI, Ancestry.co.uk have just completed all of their war records for that time and would be a good source of research.  I believe you have to pay though although you may get the first month free.

Contact the Royal Marines. They'll have his service record.

Just got some info from Royal Navy from Portsmouth they send a form you get a next of kin to sign it. And they sent us his navy records and service sheet. We had to prove his death but OH took a picture of his grave as we had no death certificate. Write to Plymouth and they should do the same for you took about two weeks.
