Topic Dog Boards / Health / Vomiting 6 month old spaniel
- By spaniel fan [gb] Date 25.10.09 00:11 UTC
Advice welcomed - my 6 month cocker spaniel has had an upset tummy since Thursday.  Thursday he was sick twice.  On Friday I was at the vet for his six month check and mentioned this - vet checked his tum and abdomen and was relaxed.  I was not particularly concerned as he was lively, defecating & eating normally normally.  However he has carried on being sick every 6 hours or so.  He doesn't seem uncomfortable. is as lively as ever and is pestering for food ( restricted food most of today) and gave him only chicken and rice late this evening.  It's really weird - can think of nothing dodgy he might have picked up on walk and in all other respect he seem perfectly OK.  The vomiting takes the form of 20 -30 seconds heaving bringing up bile this morning and then the chicken/rice from tonight and then he acts as though nothing has happened!  I am making sure he stays well hydrated.  Bit confused as to whether I should be really worried - on the one hand he seems lively and normal but it seems a bit odd that he is vomiting every 6 hours or so!

Is the bile he is bringing up white or yellow?  Is he making any "hacking" noises or doing any throat clearing in between being sick?

I think if he were my dog, if it persists, I would take him back and possibly get the vet to do an xray/endoscope incase he has something wedged further down in his tum.

If they have eaten things they shouldn't have, it doesn't always affect them straight away. Earlier this year one of my bitches ate a Mcdonalds type paper cup with the waxy surface and about 3 days later, she was sick off and on for a day and I took her to the Vet and luckily she had actually chewed it up in places so although it wouldn't degrade in her tum because of the wax, it was passing through, but our Vet thought that the lining of her stomach was inflammed.  At that time she didn't have the poops but when it started passing through her intestine, she did have a couple of upset tummy days.

Is he upto date with his wormings too?

Thanks both

Bile is white/clear.  Not excessively clearing throat - don't think it is obstruction.  However he making a kind of 'hacking motion' in that I am aware he is about to be sick as he works around making hacking sounds then his stomach visibly contracts in and out.  He sicked up a very small bit of clear bile this morning.  As before he is lively and in all other respect seems OK.

He is up to date with his worming - due to give him the six month one later this week.

Think will return to vet if not sorted by end of day!

i'd pop back to the vets if this carries on.
when you feed him chicken and rice try giving him three little meals a day rather than not feeding him most the day then a bigger meal.
also try just a little rice on it's won for a couple of feeds then add the chicken a bit later and see if he copes better. this usually works for my dogs after a couple of days but as i said go back to the vest if your worried.

Bringing up white or clear liquid can be a sign of kennel cough, they quite often do this when they first get up or run around a bit and then are fine for a while. They will usually sound like they have something stuck in their throat. I don't think they'd normally bring up food as well though so might not be KC.

KC is what I was thinking of.  It's the time of year when it seems most prevalent, although I know of other people whose dogs have had it at other times of year - my young dogs always seemed to get it about now if they were going to, between our Club Show at the end of September and Midland Counties.  It's often confused with being sick.  If the other end is normal and what is being brought up is white froth, like melted mashmallow, then I would expect it to be that.
If you are at all concerned, then go back to the vet.  But it might be best to wait outside of the surgery until it is your turn - KC is highly infectious.

I agree it could be KC, one of our bitches gets every year even though she has had the injection for it every year, when she has a violent coughing  fit it does sometimes trigger her to bringing up bile, but she does also have runny eyes and a general sad apperance, so it might not be.

Another one who thought of KC.
