Owning a Miniature Schnauzer? Anyone know.

Do not know a great deal about the breed, the odd one or two in our local park are not friendly towards my two and I have been told by others that this is a common trait.

i have a min schnauzer bitch and they are a dog with a big personality. mine plus others i know can be very vocal, not as in just barking for no reason but when out on walks and when they get excited playing with other dogs. some people think they sound like their being aggressive but it's just what they do and it's all in the name of fun and not done in nasty way.
they have loads of energy and mine and another i know will run and run when i go out but in the same respect will be quite happy with sorter walks.
mine can be a right busy body and will follow me everywhere and likes lots of attention. my girl was pretty easy to train as she is very food orientated but they can also be stubborn and do not like being told off but respond well to reward based training.
she can also be a little frightened of some other dogs but not in an aggressive way and she just runs away from them and wants to continue her walk but i know others ones that are fine with all other dogs so you just need to do a lot of socialization as a pup but you should do this with all pups anyway.
they don't moult so they need to be clipped or stripped. i clip mine and it you start this from very young then they get used to it very easily.must admit i love the fact that there's very little hair round the house.
if your looking for a fun dog with a big personality then this is the dog but just make sure you get plenty of training in and your be rewarded for your efforts.
i've seen a few at training classes and they learn very quickly so it's down to the owner to make a great dog.

I have owned two Miniature Schnauzers - both were quiet and great with other dogs (as were all the others I have known). Daisy was laid back and quiet whereas Leo is more adventerous/stubborn. Daisy was obsessed with food and easy to train - whereas at  6 years old Leo can still have the odd teenage tantrum and refuse to come back when I want him.

After Daisy died (at just under 7 years old) the only thing that stopped me getting another was health problems - she had colitis on and off all her life and a couple of times I thought I was going to lose her. Saying that Leo is as tough as anything and never been to the vet for anything other than his boosters.

They seem very terrrierish by nature and in fact in some countries are in that group.

Lovely little breed full of character and love being trained. Can be a bit barky but  if you train them from a young age I see no problem.   They do not shead so need clipped or stripped.  Make lovely family pets and I can't understand why they are not  more popular

They must be eye test annually if breeding stock and puppy litters must be screened at 8 weeks and both parents must have current clear eye tests.  Some lovely ones around.   Think they are quite a healthy breed to.

I have two friends with lovely mini schnauzers,(one each!) both very good with other dogs, children, one of my friends has cats who she shares her bed with, not yappy. Both healthy too, can't fault them really, lovely little dogs!!

a disadvantage is they are hard to spell

Lovely little dogs but some of them can have very 'fluffy' furnishings which can be a nightmare to keep knot free - be prepared for plenty of grooming :)  but they have wonderful personalities :-D

The one I had in my puppy class was very vocal, he still comes now as an adult and seems intelligent but somewhat stubborn. My friend also had one once who I vaguely remember, he wasn't noisy as far as I remember and she works obedience with all her current dogs so I imagine she worked him too. And they're very attractive little dogs!
