brain is not working. I want to sew new "hooks" into my kids' coats as the material ones are wearing & tearing, but the coats are in good condition. I want to use a chain type thing rather than material. Is there a name for such a thing (I want to call them blazer chains but googling them has shown nothing). If anyone has a clue what I'm on about, please can you tell me what they're called, where to buy them & if they're easy to sew on?!

I know exactly what you mean! :-)
But you've got me going now, as I hadn't ever thought about it. I've got a tailored suede jacket "for best" and it has a luxury lining, with the chain, it looks very smart and upmarket.
There's always something to get you thinking isn't there :) Woolworths used to be great for small haberdashery items - I now have to use the craft section of my local garden centre!
You ought to be able to buy small lengths of chain from a diy store and it should be easy enough to sew if it has an open link. Good luck - my kids would always pull their coat hoops off in a rush to get them off the peg and out of school...
