Does anyone know if it is safe to vaccinate a lactating bitch with a new litter please?

None of the datasheets that I've checked say that it's safe to vaccinate a lactating bitch; pregnant bitch, yes, but nothing about lactating with new puppies.

Best to check with your vet.

Yes, I've had the same problem. I'm rarely away from the vets, so I'll ask tomorrow morning. Thanks

If it was me I'd leave it unless she was out and about with other dogs.

I can't see why you would risk it even if she is around lots of other dogs. A dog can't urgently need vaccinating can it? If she was fine before she was mated then I can't see that waiting a few more weeks for her booster will make any difference at all??

I know it isn't quite the same, but I've bred cats for many years and it often happens that a queen is due her booster whilst she has kittens. Every time that happens I wait and booster the queen at the same time as her kittens are getting their first vaccination, and the vets have always agreed this is a good way of doing things.

i would not vaccinate a bitch with young puppies, just not worth the risk for the sake of waiting a few more weeks, but then i dont do yearly boosters on my dogs either so thats just my own personal opinion

Thanks everyone. It makes sense to wait, I guess.

I've never chanced having boosters on lactating bitches myself.

I had a bitch done a little early when I knew I was going to have her mated.  Booster was done on day 2 of season, and she was mated on days 8 & 10.  She always stands early, and has very short seasons.  Flags from day 3!  She had a perfectly normal pregnancy, and her litter was fine.

I also let a girl go overdue slightly, and had her booster done when pups were 10 weeks.

You get 3 months from when the booster is due anyway, I would definitely leave it.
