Yesterday I took all my 4 dogs on to our local moor (that is Hannah the Greek Gal, Isla the sheltie, Lucy the westie and Pip the JR). The weather was lovely and we walked along following the stream. Suddenly there was a flurry and Hannah saw a squirrel on the other side of the stream running up a tree. Right away she was swimming to the other side and to my astonishment (not having seen a dog climb before) she was shinning up the tree (she is a Greek mountain hound, presumably adept in the art of climbing). However the squuirrel had pranced off and so did Madam.
On the other side of the stream is a cricket club and apart from the access from the stream - unless you can swim like Hannah - there is none. Hannah then disappeared despite my calling and yelling and there was no way I could go and look for her as all was fenced off. Most people know me there so I had lots of help and advice. Through the trees on the other side of the stream we could see Hannah who was sniffing away in the middle of the cricket pitch. But she was oblivious to our calling- typical hound!
So I walked all the way back to where I had left the car( a mile or so) to and put the 3 other dogs in it. I wallked up to the enormous gates of the cricket pitch which were locked..They had large spikes on the top. By this time Hannah was howling the other side of themHannah's lead by the car in panic and by the time I had run back to the gates the fellow, Ryan, had vaulted over the gates amazing) and was quietly talking to Hannah who was a bit upset by this time. I gave him a treat for her and he managed to slip on her lead. He then said that we somehow had to get her back over these horrid gates. Ryan then draped his coat over some of the spikes and with me one side and him the other he managed to gently "throw" Hannah over the gates and I managed to catch her! It was all very dodgy!
Hannah is a bit full of herself at the mo and as I have said before her recall is rubbish! However thank goodness she is home! I am endlessly grateful to Ryan who told me is a dog walker. I am sure he can do a bit of dog walking for me as he is obviously a very sensible young man.
All in all a very stressful day ....
