I have a leather jacket that's been hung in a wardrobe for many years and now smells stale.  Has anyone got any ideas for getting rid of the smell?  I've washed it all down with baby wipes and left it outside for 24 hours, but it's still smelling.  It's now been 'airing' in front of a window for two weeks.  My local supermarket didn't have any leather cleaners and neither did Timpsons when I asked them.

Any ideas?

Thanks Killickchick.

Where will I get that, what is it and what do you do with it?

You might find the type of cream leather cleaner, designed for leather furniture, is more suited to your jacket.  It's quite light and will be easy to apply.

To deal with the stale smell that might be on the lining you can use those tumble drier thingamabobs.  Can't remember what they are called but are like bits of scented tissue paper (Bounce?).  just stick one in each pocket for a while

You can also get leather jackets cleaned by a specialist dry cleaner - they will also sell you an appropriate cream cleaner.

As Dogs a Babe said, you could use furniture leather cleaner - but the ones I have used, don't have much of a smell to them which could be a problem as you are trying to freshen the smell.

Saddle soap you can get from a saddlers, maybe even online. You just dampen a soft cloth, rub it on the bar of soap (don't use too much, you don't want it to foam) and rub it into the leather - you can add more if needed. No need to wash off, but use another soft cloth to buff up. It leaves a lovely fresh leather smell - think of clean horses tack! The bar will last you forever!!! ;)

Have you a friend who rides/keeps horses? or a local riding school you can go and beg for a piece of soap?

Fabulous, thanks Killickchick.  I'll order some of this, it's not going to break the bank.  Hopefully this'll do the trick.
