We bought two guniea pigs last winter (Alex and Dave who have very crazy hair!!), we kept them indoors in the huge dog cage until it was warm enough for them to go outside.  They are now outside in one of those hutches which sits on top of a run with a ladder that goes down.  Now the weather is getting colder we have realised that we are going to have to do a lot of clearing out to find them room in one of the sheds and will also have to get them a new hutch as the hutch without the run wont be big enough (coming back inside is not a option - the room where they were is now my babies nursery !!). 

They are in a sheltered position with a hedge behind and the shed along side them, they also have the big apple tree the other side.  I was just wondering what other people do and whether we could leave them outside as long as they had plenty of bedding and were well covered over with carpet etc?

I used to move the hutches into the utility room in winter, and put the piggies out in the runs during warmer days.

Mine go in the garage , i wouldn't leave them out .

I had guinea pigs for years outside, and in Scotland :-D  I made sure their hutches were completely waterproof and had clear plastic sheeting, weighed down with a strip of wood, that flipped over the front at night or in really awful weather. Lots of bedding and they all lived long happy lives.

I'm on the north east coast of Scotland and our Guinea Pigs stayed outside all winter with extra bedding and a cover over the mesh door of the hutch as has already been mentioned with no problems at all.

i too had mine in sheltered part of garden, in colder weather, like tigger and rjs i would put more bedding in and a waterproof cover hanging over the front of the hutch :)

Mine were kept outside in a very sheltered part of the garden.  They got extra bedding and the whole hutch was bubble wrapped for extra warmth and weighed down at the front so it couldn't blow up.  They all lived to good ages and seemed happy little piggies.  Ah, I miss having guinea pigs.

Thanks all, I will have a think about how I can make their hutch ultra warm - if it gets really cold I can bring their hutch into the shed over night then put it back out in the morning so they have their run.

To be honest with you if possible i wouldnt leave them out in the winter, they shouldnt really be kept out in the cold i hava had guinea pigs practically all my life and my little girl smudge one of our first passed away and we think it could quite possibly be that she was out in the winter and she had plenty of bedding. The shed however would be fine. Sorry if you this is going against what most people have written.
