Two weeks ago my daughter ordered and paid for her wedding and bridesmaid dresses. They were paid for using a visa debit card. The shop where she bought them has, this week,  gone into liquidation. It appears that as the debit card is a visa debit we will be able to make a claim once we have a letter confirming that she will not be getting her dress or a refund. Has anyone made a claim this way and how long does it take until its all settled and the money is refunded? Her wedding is in 8 months and she needs to find another bridal shop who can order her dress and I was wondering how quickly the claims are dealt with. Thanks.

I have had credit card payments refunded within a couple of weeks.

Thank you, thats good to know, had a horrible feeling that it would take months. I hope we are able to get some sort of confirmation regarding the dress from the receivers quickly too and then we can make a claim.
Thank you

I know nothing about refunds for this sort of thing - just wanted to say that I hope you manage to sort it out as soon as possible!

I had a refund within about 3-4 weeks when I had cause to claim for goods not received.

> debit card is a visa debit

I thought debit and credit cards were different and you are always better using a credit card when buying holidays etc.as you are better protected .
Perhaps someone can put me right ?

I'm pretty certain of this as well -you are not protected with a debit card, only a credit card.

I think you're right, my understanding was that if you paid by credit card and it was over £100 the credit card co would refund the money, it's not the same for debit cards, as the money has already left your account. I stumbled across this the other day which seems to back this up, with some other interesting facts.........

For the OP's daughter's sake I hope we're wrong.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I saw recently that Visa are giving the same protaction to debit cards as they do to cradit cards - I don't know if it's been started yet, or if there is a minimum amount.

THIS is a good source of information on the subject of what protection debit cards may give.

No I think you are right, a credit card is covered a debit isnt. Thats why we use OH's access for holidays ect...

Whether you are able to get your money back when using a debit card depends on which one you use. Ours is visa debit and we are able to get a refund using a system under visa's own rules where they do a chargeback to the bank that collected the payment. The bank have already sent out the forms for us to claim back the money. We are just waiting now for the contact details of the administration company so that we can get written confirmation or an e mail stating that the company has gone into liquidation and that they will not be providing her dresses or a refund and then we can make a claim.
