Just thought I would point out, having done my own research and ultimately contacting the Kennel Club myself that this service is (well for my breed anyway) misleading. Having seen the open registry for my breed who have failed their eye screening for MRD since 1993 I was somewhat perplexed when I came to check some of those dogs on the Kennel club website only to discover that they are listed as being unaffected by eye disease !
It turns out that the website is referring to Hereditary Cataracts only and not MRD. Anyone wanting to know if a dog is free of MRD must therefore consult the Breed Open Registry. The KC have promised me they will ensure that it is made clear on their website that the health finder is not referring to MRD - nothing has been amended so far since I spoke with them last week but I live in hope !
Apparently, the reason MRD is listed separately from other eye diseases is because of a big "hoo-hah" with Golden Retriever breeders a while back regarding the complex nature of the disease eg. retinal folds can "disappear".
I must say I am really cross that dogs are being listed as "unaffected" by eye disease when clearly this is not necessarily so. In the case of my breed, a dog must be found to be suffering from HC
and MRD before it will be listed as "affected" !
I wonder if this inaccuracy affects all breeds who are screened under the BVA/KC scheme for MRD, I am assuming so. Anyone who feels it is downright misleading like I do would do well to contact the KC with their complaint to ensure this is addressed asap.
