Topic Dog Boards / General / ?????and can't believe it

Went to my local supermarket just now and parked up. Could see a dog in the boot of a car. All 4 windows of the car are ajar and the car is not parked in the shade. The dog i could see at the time looked fine, but that is not the point here.
*************
I go in and get a few bits and come back to my car, yes the dog is still there, open my car up which is parked right near and i am swarmed by the heat that comes out of my car. I was gone 10 mins.
I then go back into the store and get them to call out the owner of said vehicle, well 1/2hr has now gone by that i have seen the car there, eventually a man turns up and starts having a go at me about calling up and how i am such a do gooder.
His excuse was as its a new car and doesn't get hot inside?? its ok. He feels as he takes his dog everywhere rather than leave it at home he is a good owner. Well i disputed that and said being 23 degrees and a cloudless sky its not fine to leave a dog in a car for more than 1/2hr, told him to leave dog at home when going shopping. He was still going on, i walked away as he just wouldn't listen.
He even said that he gets this all the time, so he came over once he had finished his shopping and 2 calls later from the shop staff for him to attend.

What is up with people???? I honestly couldn't believe it, really couldn't..

You did the right thing for the dog B---er the owner should not have a dog all car's get hot inside!!
I have seen the same my self and I have also seen a copper take out a window to give a poor dog some air as well - more power to your elbow girl!! :-)

Wouldn't hesitate to force a window or break it if necessary.  Well done to you for hanging around.

Aww well done for hanging around and actually having the guts to say something, especially to a horrible man like he sounds.. i just hope one day he realises he is wrong before its too late :( some people really rub me up the total wrong way, its just ignorant and they have no understand, makes me mad :(

you did the right thing sue, it takes guts to do that, i too have seen this in a supermarket car park and reported it, the other thing that annoys me is people leaving their poor dogs outside supermarkets :( i think it is so unfair for the dog to be left tied up in the full sun, near lots of passing trolleys and the hussle and bussle, the dogs look so scared. Why on earth do people do it! ? :( :(

New car -well I hope eventually he ends up with a window broken to rescue the dog, sounds like he deserves it!

I had the dog in the car the other day and planned to go into the supermarket for a quick few things.  I drove round and round the car park looking for a place in the shade.  There wasn't one.  I ended up parking up the road on double yellows (rather old and faded ones) because it was the only place with shade.  While I was in the shop the heavens opened and there was a terrific downpour - so I could have left the car anywhere if only I had known.  On a warm day even the shade isn't enough - I have parked under a gazebo at shows and still only leave the dog long enough to walk a course.  Perhaps if that man had been made to sit in the car for half an hour perhaps he would have appreciated how hot it got - people like that just can't be told.  I hope there is someone like you in the car park everytime he does it so he gets so fed up he leaves the dog at home in comfort.

Marianne, in a way i was wishing the dog was showing signs of distress as i would of got the security to do something then, i had nothing to break a window with at the time. Then he would be sorry. Don't wish anything ill to become of that dog, actually looked like a Brittany from what i could see as well.

Ceejay that is just what i said to my Dad when i got home all fuming and wound up, still am tbh.. I sill have his number plate around somewhere that i wrote down, will be keeping an eye out for that car as hardly any of them about in this country.

You did the right thing!  I dont know how people can think its ok to leave a dog in the car on a hot day, for a long time.  The nerve of some people!

Next time just call the police and see how the owner likes it then. What an ignorant abuser of people and animals. Good on you for tackling him.

> call the police

To be honest that is my job, but was not working, so could only do so much. As the dog wasn't in distress there is little we could of done, which is stupid really. Prevention is better than cure i feel hence why i got the owner to the customer service desk.
Normally i would expect the average person to be thankful that someone out there cares and would be embarressed, not this guy.. oh no..
I let him blow of steam before i started speaking, normally helps, but in this case i was someone interfering with his life>

Had that at a local agricultural show few years back (1 day show) with a dog show 2 bulldogs left in a car :(
Day was really warm and got warmer throughout the day, my car was fully covered with reflective sheets, iced water bottles in the cage
to cool the dogs, fans etc etc this one was in full sun, around a different horse ring no shade etc.
Dog show organiser broke into car and got two dogs out brought them to the entries tent
we got to work on them trying to cool them down and he put a call out for the onsite vet to come straight over....
Eventually the owners finally made their way over to dog entries tent and seemed more put out
that their window had been bust to get the dogs out :(
Said that their dogs were fine - erm when they were first at our tent they were in distress...
Grrr some people just have no clue at all what would they rather dead dog that had been put through hell ??

I've come away from shows when my dogs have been getting too warm and I can't get them cooled down to my satisfaction.
Or even not bothered going if it looks like it's going to be way too hot.
My dogs are precious, rather have them safe and well and snoozing on the sofa with air con unit on than drag them round a show
or shopping etc.

suejaw, thank heavens there are people like you out there. If I have my dogs in the car with me for any reason and have to nip out, even for a minute, I leave the windows open...just in case anything happens to me (like having heart failure when I I get a budgeting lecture from the ATM) :-)

Well done you , i think i would have been tempted to put a brick through an expensive electric window !!

Personally I would say that's very relevant - even the police won't break into a car if the dog is showing no signs of distress. Perhaps he had a fan plugged into the cigarette lighter?
