Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Just Chicken?
- By clio1 [gb] Date 07.09.09 11:41 UTC
I've just discovered that my Butcher sells pet mince, 99p a kilo.  I could feed my 2 Labs this as their main meal with some mixer and it works out very reasonable.  Also I don't need to keep a load in the freezer as I shop every couple of days.
The only drawback is that the mince is only in chicken,  would there be a problem feeding just minced chicken with mixer everyday?.

I would give a mug of complete for brekkie (can't do meat in the morning). They get big marrowbones and tinned sardines once or twice a week as well, also any diner leftovers which is usually just potatoes or pasta - though not alot!.

Also,  should the chicken mince be lightly cooked or just fed raw?

Thanks for your help.

I have started feeding raw for about 3 months although not entirely as I use mixer as well.  My dogs have mince every everning for their dinner but I vary it every day, so could be chicken, tripe, lamb, turkey, beef, fish or rabbit.  for breakfast would be mixer with cottage cheese, sardines, egg etc. and then twice a week they will have chicken wings instead plus they get raw bones as often as I can get them.

Personally I think variety is better.

Do you ever cook the mince, or just feed it raw?

No need to cook, they enjoy just as is. I am no expert but all I have read points towards needing a variety. By mixer are you refering to complete or just a mixer. I feed raw tripe, beef, turkey and lamb mince, chopped up liver and hearts and sardines on rotation for breakfast with pulped veg with added eggs, shells and garlic a couple of days a week, and complete for tea. I find this best as if we get someone else to look after the dogs when we are away on holiday or when we are in the caravan we can revert to feeding complete for both meals without upsetting there tums. I believe its not good to mix complete with the raw at the same meal.
