Topic Dog Boards / Health / Westie with ear infection

Ive just discovered that my Westie has an ear infection :( She has lots of puss in her ear and has been scratching it. Has anyone any idea if you can get a cheaper alternative to treat it at a pet shop rather than taking her to the vets before i phone them. Does anyone have any clue how much it costs at the vets?

Don't risk putting anything down her ear until it's been examined by a vet to see if the eardrum is still intact, otherwise you risk doing further damage which will be even more expensive and difficult to treat.

Expect to pay a consultation fee (£30?) plus medication (depends what's needed, but a minimum of another £20 at a guess).

Ok thanks :) I shall phone the vet!

Once you have the outcome from the vet then there are natural alternative remedies that can help a dog with ear problems so that you don't have to put harsh chemicals into your dogs ears.

I took her today and the vet gave me some Canaural for her, hopefully it will get rid of it! It was £32 altogether :)

Perry, what are the natural remedies?

When one of mine had a bad ear infection (previous treatment with Ab's had not quite killed it), it cost me more than £500, it really is worth being sure that you have dealt with the problem thoroughly as prolonged treatment is not only expensive but very painful.

Perry, what are the natural remedies?

I use colloidal silver to clean my boys ears and it is really gentle and effective.  I get mine from http://www.ag4all.co.uk/
it can be used for a multitude of things, brilliant for people as well as dogs.  You can use the colloidal silver 2-3 time daily.

Another remedy is about 1/2 an ounce of almond oil to one 400 IU capsule of vitamin E mixed together and gently warmed, you can then put this into the dogs ears gently and massage and then remove the excess oil with cotton pads, this will clean out quite messy ears.  This treatment should be carried out every other day.

Hope this helps.
