Topic Dog Boards / General / x breed or on the fashionable x band wagon?
- By pat [gb] Date 27.08.09 08:45 UTC
I read about many fashionable X breeds advertised but sometimes I have to wonder if people are just getting on the band wagon with an excuse for an over inflated price tag. Australian cross Cairn pups - £350.  Is this an acceptable x or an unfortunate mating?

Recently spoke to a person who had an miniature labradoodle price tage £1,200 with a link to the Austalian line. But would have been £2,400 - something to do with the Australian labradoodle line/cross/ so many generations of breeding. Can someone explain the reasoning behind all this?

Hi Pat

Having visited often and now living in Australia, I can safely say all manner of crosses exist and are being bred on a huge level here.
From my knowledge, I wouldn't say that Australian 'fashionable' crosses are any better (right word?) than any other countries that choose to cross breed.
I would say that it seems much more prolific here than I experienced in the UK.  Add to that the fact that in Australia these sorts of crosses have been bred for a lot longer time period, then one could say they have more 'experience' at it! (tic)!

my friend is looking after a golden doodle, i must say i was not impressed! The poor thing needs constant brushing as its fur was long but was like cotton wool texture, he had matted clumps even though he had been brushed regularly :( . They paid £750 for him! And was told he wont moult, but my friends house was full of his fur! And my friend said she is having to hoover several times a day then normal since she has been looking after him! She has her own dog that is black and long haired, but it is the golden doodle that seems to loose more!

Designer mixes are so big now they are here to stay.  They can come with registration from various registries like the Designer Dogs Kennel Club and so it all sounds very convincing. Probably it's kind of making 'Art' with dogs.

That is so sad.  I've sort of defended 'knowledgable, well-intentioned and researched breeding' liking it to such breeds as the Doberman - a one-time designer dog.  Your link completely squashes all that.
I think the references to Australian breeding on labradoodles refers to a breeding programme linked with Guide/Assitance dogs trying to breed 'hypo-allergenic' dogs using Poodles and Labradors.  I believe F1 refers to 1st cross offspring and so on - the idea being to create a new standardised breed.  I also believe that this has not as yet been consistent. What was originally an honest desire has turned into a money making machine, I beleive.
