Hi
I wasn't sure which board to post this as it could have come under searching/health/breeding so I plumped for general!
I'm looking for a poodle and have been in touch with a breeder quoting a top price for a well bred puppy. This price I am willing to pay (instead of my hol to Tenerife lol). But I've also seen poodles advertised for at least half of what this breeder is charging so I'd make quite a saving if I went for the cheaper dog!
So can I ask u experts on this board, why the variance in price? What should I look out for and the questions I need to ask?
I'm thinking it's like buying a car, you can end up with a knackered old shed for a cheap price but have a good runner for the top of the range version.
I'll look forward to your comments!

I would be expecting to pay around £800.00 .
Do they do all relevant health tests ? Have you got this persons details via the Breed Club ?

You need to know if the parents are health tested. PRA is a problem in poodles, ask if parents are eye tested.
I would prefer to pay top price for a pup with no luxated patellas in the lines, and clear eye tests.

Or
DNA tested depending on the size of
Poodle you are looking for.
Standard Poodles should also be scored for HD , from lines that do not have any incidence of
Epilepsy,
Sebaceous Adenitis in the pedigree

Only ever kept toys, so post reflects this.

There is a DNA test for Toys
I have 2 toy poodles whom I bought from an accredited kennel club breeder as the last poodle I had who I actually inherited from my Parents was a sickly dog all his life suffering from collitis, who was bought as a result of an advert in the paper. My current 2 poodles came from the same breeder Rusty cost me £600.00 pounds in January 2005 and Pepe was £750.00 in August 2006 so not cheap but they are well bred and also appear to be in good health at the moment. I have noticed on e pupz that you can get pups a lot cheaper but I myself would be a bit wary incase they turned out to have health problems like my last poodle did.
I think where you geographically also reflects on the asking price. In my area you can get a DNA tested pup for £600.00 but I have paid considerably more for mine but had to travel quite a bit to get the bloodlines I wanted.
The main thing is that they are from tested parents as no-one wants a dog who may go blind.
