Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / 12 week old pup been ill now drinking a lot

Hi, i bought a staffy pup 2 and a half weeks ago. He seemed fine at first, went for his 1st vac and was wormed a week later. Since thursday last week hes had mild diahorrea after licking a chocolate sweet that had been thrown into our garden. He only had a little of the sweet but never the less it seems to have caused the diahorrea. Its not bad diahorrea (ie. its very runny but not frequent). Had him to the vet on monday who gave him a steroid injection and some pro-kolin. He was also starved for 24hr (which i thought was excessive for a pup) on the vets advice.  The problem is that since saturday hes been drinking excessively. Obviously i expect him to drink more due to the diahorrea but i feel that the amount hes having is excessive - hes also weeing a lot more. I have quite a lot of experience with dogs but have not known this before. Anyones advice would be appreciated, many thanks!

Hi,

I would be straight back down to the vets - I would have thought it unlikely that just licking a sweet for a 12wk old staff pup would cause a problem that extreme unless there are gastro probs any way, or they can be very unsettled yummy wise when they move into a new home and also wormers can have an affect on that.  Is he on the same food that he was at the previous home?  If so what is it and how often are you feeding him.  He may be drinking more as he'll be loosing fluid because of the diahorrea and it may be that he's very hungry if he's been starved for 24hrs.

To be on the safe side I would get a urine sample and go back to the vets, make sure his temp is ok and that his tum feels ok etc.

Hope he's on the mend soon :-)

Hi Karen, thanks for your advice. Jackson is having chicken breast every 2 hours during the day at the mo and was on pedigree complete and tesco tinned puppy food, 4 times a day when i got him, he has also sneaked cat food on a few occassions. I put him on royal canin medium junior and he seemed fine if a little picky on that. Hes back at the vets this morning. So far hes had five large drinks this morning and its only 10.15am. His pee is just like water i.e. not yellow and dosent smell of wee. He hasnt been for a poo for 2 days now which is a good thing.

 Actually that is a bad thing if he hasn't passed any faeces for 48 hours

Apparently its quite common for a dog not to go for a poo for a while whilst on the mend after diahorrea (according to my vet). Its to do with the starvation period and having smaller meals. Anyway hes still weeing a lot and i'm monitoring how much hes drinking now. Vet says 100ml per kg of body weight in 24hr is a normal amount of water.  Hes lost 0.3kg since monday which is alarming as he only weighs 5.6kg now. Taking a wee sample to be tested as soon as i can get one.

Steroids also increase water intake  the vet will be able to advise on that
hope he is better soon

Hi newfienook thanks for your advice and good wishes. His thirst increased before the steroid injection.
