Topic Dog Boards / Health / suspected fracture in my 7mth old ridgeback girls hind leg.

My never away fom the vet Zola was walking today as she does everyday trotting along the same old fenceline and I saw her side drop and she went down, she lay on her side and her left backfoot she was shaking it really violently, like a spasm.
I thought she had been stung or trod on something, but she was stung by wasp earlier this week and screamed like a banshee, Today she just lay and went quiet. No sound which for her is weird.
Me and another dog walker checked for puncture or sting but nothing.
Zola stood up flicked foot, tried to trot and kept flicking until she fell over. I then had to carry all 29 kgs of her home <back broke>

She was very quiet - vet suspected shock.

Yesterday she caught he leg badly as she hopped outside, we think this started the injury (she screamed yesterday but then seemed fine) and today she perhaps stepped on an unevn surface of stone and finished the job.
Very swollen, too much so to xray today. Vet said she could feel some crunching and said she suspects some fracture or at very  least serious sprain.
48 hrs cage rest, anti inflammatories, no painkiller as she said this will give Zola idea of moving too much?

Xray monday or tuesday depending on swelling.

I'm gutted for her... One thing after another with this girl, I just want her to be well!

Anyone any experience of this? Vet said often with larger dogs it requires surgery if the bone is properly broken?
I'm seriously worried about this

Jane, im so sorry to hear this, poor Zola, shes been throught the wars.

No painkillers? I think i would query this, even with some analgesia, most dogs will not leap about crazy, especially if cage rested, with a fracture. if it was me i would definetely want some painkillers.

which part of the leg is swollen?
if it is broken and requires surgery, check with your vet to see how much experience of orthopedic surgery they have, you dont want something like this going wrong, could affect her for life.

the boy and I are sending healing thoughts your way

Well thank you everyone! Well what should show up today but a puncture wound, we suspect a shard of glass as the wound is a neat puncture, it is a small lump, not swollen and very clean, vet says no sign of infection and Zola is not limping much now unless she catches that bit on a stone or something.
After 3 days of panic!
It is funny as it really did appear as if she had been stuck by something or stung but not me, my husband or the vet could find ANY sign of a wound. I checked it thoroughly yesterday and nothing there either, but today there it is.
So BIG relief here BIG

Thanks for the support
