Hi all if you put a clear bitch to a clear stud dog would the puppies also be clear of SM.
I am having my girl mri scanned if clear i will be mating her next year.
Her heart is healthy & eyes. She is 2 1/2 years old.

I don't think there are any guarantees as they haven't found a specific gene, it is more like for example hip scoring or heart testing that low scoring parents are most likely to produce pups that do not suffer from Hip Dysplasia or Heart problems etc.

If you have researched SM you will know that the MRI scan is the only tool we have at the moment to try not to breed Cavaliers with SM. I know of at least one clear dog who has produced an affected dog.

Hopefully if breeders continue to use clear dogs on clear bitches then the incidence of SM may be lessened. Roodee has 5 out of the 6 dogs in the first two generations of his pedigree(the 6th died before he could be scanned)

What you also have to remember is that the stud dog if possible should be over 5 & still clear heart/eyes. The odds then are better for better heart & eyes.

Roodee's dad is 6 this year & as far as I know he hasn't been over used as a stud either.

"would the puppies also be clear of SM"
Not as simple as that I'm afraid.
Read
http://www.veterinary-neurologist.co.uk/part5.htm#52 for a full explanation.

And please read the full advice for the CKCS breeding protocol.
EBVs are coming soon and you can read about that too on the same site.
What ever happens please send DNA and full result documentation to Sarah Blott at the AHT ( details also on the site) - your info will go towards improving the new predictive breeding program they are developing. The more info - the more accurate the program will be.

Please read all about it.

Thank you toolz for the link. It is very interesting to read i have put it in my favourites.
Moonmaiden thank you for your good advice the stud dog that i will be using is 8years old with clear heart and eyes.
When i get my girl scanned i will send the results to the right person.
I have been breeding since 2002 and out of all the pups that i have bred only 1 has sm all his littermates are in good health with healthy hearts and eyes. All the other pups have clear hearts and eyes so far they are all seem clear of sm.But it is 1 to many his litter sister is clear.
