My lab x collie (ish) has odd nose pigmentation, and it seems to be spreading. I noticed it a few months ago and the bottom of his nose/upper lip was pink not black and the pinkness seems to be speading over his nose. It has started to turn pink from the top now aswell, with the middle of his nose and a some spots being black. (he has quite a small nose) It is not sore or painful to touch, but it just looks abit odd. Are dogs noses supposed to be one colour? I do put suncream on it when it is very hot as it looks like human skin. This goes down a treat as he thinks it tastes better than anything. Just wondered as if this continued to spread, his whole nose would be pink!

This could be snow nose.

What colour are his mucous membranes normally jet black or liver coloured.

What is his coat colour as pink noses are linked to the dilute coat colours and patterns like merle.

Jet black, if mucous membranes are what I think they are :) He has a black coat with a white chest like a collie, and his two back feet are white.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is snow nose?
thank you for your reply

These are the membranes of the lips, eyes, anus etc.

It is seasonal loss of pigmentation, usually in the winter.

It seems to happen in Labradors and also the dogs of Merle colouring.

An increase of Zinc (found in kelp) is often found to be helpful.

There are of course health issues that could present in a similar way, so if in doubt see the vet..

My x collie has black pigmentation [nose and other skin bits as Brainless mentioned]  she does go pink though and it does seem to depend on the anount of sunlight she gets.  She's a tru blonde like a Goldeb Retriever.  I have also noticed her coat colour darkens to a 'strawberry blonde in the winter months.  I was worried about her pigmentation change many years ago - she's at least 12 now - and asked the vet.  She's fine but I've noticed that over the years her skin colour has lightned or stayed lighter.  So has her hair colour, but, being blonde it's not so noticable as in a black dog.
Do get yours checked out though, even if just for your peace of mind.

one of my  bitches occasionally looses her pigment during a season I give her Elderberry and nettle extract  http://www.dorwest.com/prodinfo.asp?number=EN

You could contact them and ask for some advice.

My collie x lab also has a 'multicoloured' nose, well a black nose and pink nostril though it's been stable throughout his life.  Maybe I'd better keep a closer eye on it!
