Reading another thread made me think. How long and how often you walk your dogs? One of my yorkies seems to be tired after a short walk but my cairn will keep going for as long as the walk takes. I'm interested to see what others do.

My American cocker will generally walk for about an hour twice a day with little walks up the village etc during the day, if its a hot day she tends to suffer badly laying down at every oppotunity.

She is rather lazy choosing not to run or play on her walks..as to conserve her energy i think !

She gets more excited if i pick up the car keys than her collar and lead...my friend said its because she knows if she rides in the car then she wont have to use her legs !!

mine are happy to take as little or as much as I give them, as well as walking for miles (I live in the sticks) they are happy to just wander down to the local shop, as long as they get an off lead nose about in the park.   I also run with them and take them to the lake a couple of times a week to swim they are most excited though when the bike comes out of the shed because that means full throttle hurtling round the woods :)

my dogs will also do as little or long as i have time for. There are days when they get a good run off lead round the fields for an hour and other days especially this time of year when they play happily in the garden all day and are not bothered about going out, so a fast walk round the village is enough.
i think for me having three dogs they burn off a lot of energy playing together so don't have so much excess energy and don't get wound up.
some days i can't go out because of my disabled daughter and will ask my parents to pop in so i can do a quick walk but there has been an odd day when this isn't possible and as long as i play in the garden or practise training they are very content.
i have found that with my dogs i can go for a really long walk or next to nothing and they still all curl up at 7pm and settle for the evening and arn't wound up. maybe i'm lucky but we seem to get by and their all happy.
the main time i make sure they have a good run is when i'm going to leave them for a couple of hours, just so i know they will settle and sleep while i'm out.

my gsd will take whatever you give him but is also happy with a wander around off lead and still remains calm and happy at home. I am also learning that my little chihuahua x will take as much as you give her. Most days she goes out with gsd for 1hr and half usually off lead and runs with all the dogs chasing their balls, if she misses a walk she seems fine but goes made with excitment when we get out again running around like she is a greyhound or as my naughty sister described her " a rat up a drain pipe"  So much for little ones not needing excercise.

my kooikerhondje will just keep on going and my yorkiepoo will too.
but my lhasa, she goes for a 15 minuet walk and she is panting and laying don on eth way back, sh is not fat by far, if anything she is thin. but her legs are so small it is just alot of effort for her.

Anything from half an hour to a couple of hours a day depending on what we are doing .

Hot weather we reduce the time unless we can get them in water.

If your Yorkie is only young, remember the golden rule, 5 mins for each month of pups age.  If it's an adult, perhaps it just doesn't need as much as your Cairn.  Like us, dogs differ.
