Topic Dog Boards / General / Warning - duvet stuffing
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 14.08.09 13:38 UTC
We are absolutely devastated - we have lost Tilda and Noof within two weeks of each other.   They both had intestinal blackage, and the vet said that there were long synthetic fibres which could have been in them for a while, which had caused a 'cheesewire' effect on their intestines.     The intestines then concertina-ed and were cut through with the fibre.  :-(  :-(   :-(

We knew they had chewed quite a small hole in their heavy-duty duvets, and pulled out some of the stuffing a little while ago, and the vet has identified this stuffing as the cause of the problem.

Have told the manufacturers, who did not seem unduly concerned, and said they'd sold thousands, so there are thousands of dogs out there who are potentially at risk.

Not sure if I can put the make on here, but maybe I can  PM  anyone who might be worried .

Sorry to hear of your loss Jo, and thanks for the warning.

Jo,

I'm so dreadfully sorry to hear you have all had to go through such an awful experience.
(I wonder if it would be worth 'googling' the duvet name/make and seeing if that throws up anyone posting similar instances?? I know this is in no way comparable, but It proves the power of people banding together, I had an instance a few years back with a Water filter and when I complained to the Manufacturer was told similar spiel "thousands sold no reported complaints"..... but when I googled I found quite a considerable amount of complaints on  various sites and consumer sites we all bandied together and only then were re-funds issued and the particular model withdraw from sale.... had we all accepted our individual initial denial e-mails from this manufacturer I doubt the final result would have happened.)

My thoughts are with you x

so sorry about your dogs.
i must admit i changed my dogs bedding to thick blankets because they kept chewing them and taking the filling out but i never thought it would hurt them.
thanks for letting us know.

I was so sorry to read this you must be devastated not only losing 2 of your lovely dogs so close together but knowing it was caused by their duvets which you thought would be safe :(  I agree with Huskygal to google to see if you can come up with more info, if it has happened to you it will have happened to someone else.

> absolutely devastated

That's just awful. Thanks for the warning.

So sorry to hear of your loss.

For that reason i am not a fan of giving dogs duvets or anything where they can pull it apart or pull out stuffing. I am always wary when people give their dogs teddys for the same reason. It only takes you to be out of the room for ten minutes for the dog to get through to the internal synthetic stuffing

Thanks for the posts, everybody - Husky girl, I will certainly Google this evening and see if I come up with anything.   Thanks for the idea>

That's terrible and their attitude stinks really.  Have to say that mine have pulled apart theirs before now.

Jo...what a shock to read that you have lost both Tilda & Noof.  I am so sorry.  He made a fantastic litter with my girl and all the pups have fantastic natures.

I had a dog years ago who insisted on chewing whatever bedding he had, he ended up being crated with no bedding.  It wasnt fair on my others to deprive them so he had to be crated. Knickers! he could gulp one over in record time.  I have about two pairs of knickers up the glens that he passed.  He once swallowed and passed a phone lock with the key still in it.

I feel for you at this time.

forgot to add that his my pup from Noof is as good a worker as her mum.  This will be the first year that Clova isnt going out picking up. she would want to but I made the desision that last year would be her last. she is almost 12yrs now.
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 14.08.09 17:06 UTC
That is awful Jo, you must be so upset. I can't believe the manufacturer would not at least have expressed an interest in knowing this.
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 14.08.09 17:21 UTC
Thanks again, folks - it will take ages for me to come to terms with such a senseless accident.    Senga - heaqring from yourself and others who are having so much fun with their sons and daughters of Noof makes me feel a lot better!

Starting picking up on 1st Sept, but we have a huge hole in our team now

is PM the manufacturers, my grand dad once complained to a dog food manufacturer they paniced, there was a possible connection with im getting odema, but it was all fine, i know its different with a dog food, but they should be just as worried.

i would sew them.
- By sam Date 14.08.09 18:29 UTC
was it an actual dog duvet or a human one?
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 14.08.09 18:35 UTC
Sam I would think that as Jo put that there will be thousands of dogs out there that have them that it is a dog specific one and not a human one, but I could be wrong?
- By Goldiemad [gb] Date 14.08.09 19:50 UTC
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Losing one is bad enough, but two in such a short space of time is so terrible. It sounds like they had a wonderful life with you, and were definitely "fit for purpose".
Thank you for the warning, my girl regularly destuffs soft toys, so I will definitely be more vigilant in future.
- By furriefriends Date 14.08.09 21:34 UTC
so sorry to hear of your losses  I know a lot of our dogs chew things and swallow them probably without us realsing. My flatcoat started eating her vet bed so I had to take that away from her. Will certainly take extra care

RIP Tilda and Noof

Jo what a terrible thing to happen, so sorry :-(

Have you thought about trading standards as well as do they have to conform with BSI ?
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 16.08.09 06:29 UTC
I don't know about trading standards - I'll certainly look into it when I feel a bit more human.   In the meantime, the more people that are aware, the better.

I am so sorry to read of your loss.
- By Goldmali Date 16.08.09 13:15 UTC
Somehow I missed this until now. I am SO sorry, that is unbearably painful and I am not impressed with the manufacturer's response. If there is no warning abut potential dangers if chewed on the product or packaging, could you sue them? Anything to stop it from happening to other dogs.
- By welshdoglover [gb] Date 16.08.09 18:16 UTC
That is just awful, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss you must be pretty angry as well.

Thanks for the warning as well

That's terrible.  I'm so sorry.
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 17.08.09 07:20 UTC
Hi Marianne

No, sure there never were any warning labels or anything similar.    After all - it was a dog bed, and dogs chew things.....

I missed this also Jo, so very sorry to hear of such a lose for you.. x
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 17.08.09 18:27 UTC
Jo, I really saddened to read this. To lose one is bad enough but two, just doesn't bear thinking about.
Can we help in any way by writing to the company with our concerns over own own dogs and perhaps suggest that they do put a warning label on. Surely if enough of us write in to them they will feel that they have to do something rather than risk a bad press.
Please let me know if I can help and PM me the company trading name and address to write to.
