Hi,
I have a bitch who is 2 1/2 we have recently mated her with a stud dog, she is quite heavy in her season usually and after mating 6 days ago she is losing a dark brown/red discharge but not heavy, i have taken her to the vet who has cleared her with no infection, says she is healthy! my question is is that the breeder has said that it is usually a good sign she is in pup, the vet says it is possible, has anyone else have a bitch who has had these symptoms before pupping
thanks
Tracie
Hi Tracy ,yes we have bred several litters with our bitches and from what i can remember all have continued to bleed right up until day 21 ish. Some have also carried on bleeding at time of ovulation when they are supposed to turn straw coloured. You don't say whay day she was mated on but it sounds pretty normal to me.Hope you get your litter.

Hi Bucksmum
she had her first successful one on the 5th whcih was her 11th day then on the 13th again successful, there are so many posts about what colour her dischagre should be and it is very confusing, so i think i will just wait and see, we have kept the stud and her apart, but she is still offering herself to him through our baby gate, i dont want to tempt fate and let him have another go so to speak, is it wise now to keep them apart as i dont want to upset her if she is in pup, we also have another bitch tily who is 18 months old and has just come in to season about 5 minutes ago, i would love a litter but dont want to breed her as well as lollipop as i think it would be too much for us and not fair on Lollipop, do you think it would be better to wait for Tilly's next season as she is only s i said 18 months and i want to concentrate on lolly
Tracie
If i have worked it out right she would now be on day 19 so yes ,i've still had my bitches bleeding then and it's possible that she may be ovulating late in her season. One of mine ovulated on day 17 and as the prime time to mate is 48 hours after ovulation you could try them again if the bitch is willing.I personally wouldn't leave them together alone until she has completely finished season in case they tie again and damage each other. As to having two litters together,i personally wouldn't like to as i sleep with bitch for first ten days and not wanting to put two litters in the same room i'd find it impossible. If i really wanted a litter from a very good bitch and she had missed several times and time was running out then maybe, but your other bitch is still very young and you have a good couple of years before you have to worry.I also don't breed from mine until they are over two years old so i think i'd wait and concentrate on this litter. It may also be stressful to the bitches to have another litter around when they are nursing their own.
Hi
thank you for the advice re Tilly and Lolly, i will definatley leave Till as you said she has plenty of time and she is still very young and it would be madness to have two liiters at once as it is our first time with a litter (hopefully) so best to concentrate on Lolly!
i would put them togethr but i dont know something is telling me not to, i dont know what it is even though she is receptive! i have read that if she is in pup that it could cause her to abort? is this right? she is my baby and i wouldnt want to do anything to hurt her, she is quiet at the moment and very fussy with me, very licky, wants to be by my side all the time which is unusual as she is normally out in the garden playing! so i am hoping its a good sign, is there any others signs i can look out for that will maybe tell me if i am going to be a grandma LOL
tarcie
I wouuldn't have thought another mating would cause her to abort, wild animals would mate for however long the bitch will stand.Saying that you have had two good matings so as long as she had ovulated around that time you should be ok.The only thing is if she is a late ovulator it may have been too early as some bitches will stand very eagerly even when they are not ready, but if i was getting a bitch mated without blood testing or swabbing to test for ovulation i would try on the days that you have and the fact that you had two good matings i would be quite hopeful. We can normally see a change at approx three weeks which is a slight darkening or pinking around the base of the nipple and maybe some hair loss. There should be a slight swelling at base of nipple also bt again very subtle, and we don't see any abdominal enlargement til the 5 to 6 week mark.(large breed).I've got my fingers crossed for you.
