Topic Dog Boards / General / Restored my faith in human nature

Just got back off holiday so wasn't able to post this any sooner.
On the day I was going on holiday I also had a judging appointment. Travelling to the show in the morning I was on a particularly fast road leading towards Wales when I saw a young English Setter bitch racing down the side of the carriageway ahead of me. She crossed the carriageway in front of the car in front of me and then raced alongside the crash barrier in the middle. We were all travelling along at about 60 miles an hour. As I passed her the panic in her face was awful. I started slowing the car so that I wouldn't be smashed into by the coach behind and eventually stopped the car a short way on. By the time I got out (no hard shoulder) she had crossed again and was on the nearside but saw me and stopped dead and looked like she was going to try to run away from me. Thankfully the coach driver stopped the coach a distance behind me and put his hazards on then a car came up on his outside and saw that I was in the road and what was happening and stopped his car alongside the coach and they both kept me and the dog safe. I decided that I might be able to tempt her by opening the boot of the car and get her curious. It worked and I was able to grab her and get her into the car. Really good outcome as she had a collar and ID on. Travelled to the show where everyone helped me to keep her safe and quiet while the owner travelled down to pick her up. We estimate that she had run approx 10 miles after running off on her morning walk. I am so grateful for the kindness of the coach driver and car that it really has restored my faith that not all people are bad about dogs. Someone was most definitely looking after us both that day. The sweetest little dog imaginable.

Wow. That could so easily have had a terrible outcome -how great to read it all ended so well.

Really there are a lot of good people out there it's just that so often we only hear the bad things. Well done all of you for saving her

What alovely outcome. I had my faith restored someweeks ago when Mia Pomxchi got spooked and ran out of the park.was missing for about an hour and we were helped by allsorts of people doing things to try and help her as she was seen running down the middle of a main roads. Finally caught by a lovely man who got out of his van and was laying on the pavement trying to entce her to come close enough to be picked up. Thank god not everyone turned away.

What a lucky dog, I can only hope that if anything like that ever happened to any of my dogs they would be lucky enought to have someone like you to help them.

Oh sweet, you should see my workman with our two on the floor with them ,man in a van can sometimes be a real softie. It does make you feel better about life when people are so kind.

Wow, what a lucky girl she is :)  I bet her owners were very relieved too!

Is is setters that tend to escape I wonder?  We had a 6 month old female red setter running down our road and we got hold of her before she got to the dual carriageway, fortunatley she had collar and tag, and when we spoke to her owners they said she has escaped a few times but this particular time was because a delivery guy had left the gate open!

Lovely to hear a happy story - well done to all of you! I once saw a Lab charge across the M11 but he went straight across my carriageway and the opposite one, then up an embankment and out of sight, so even if I'd stopped there was no way I could have got to him. I still feel worried and hope he was ok. :-(

> a delivery guy had left the gate open!

This is why I tell absolutely everyone to padlock their access gates if they have dogs.

I think you were very brave too - stopping on a busy road.  Anything could have happened.  But what a happy ending to a potentially horrible situation.  I hope the dogs owners were truly grateful to you all.

Well done to you for stopping on a main road and helping that sweet dog out of danger.
Poor thing must have been really scarred. you were very fortunate she came to you....lucky for her you came along at that time.
I bet the owners were grateful.

Aww what a lovely story, had a bit of a lump in my throat I have to say!

Well done, I bet the owners were so grateful, its just so fortunate that the dog and yourself didn't come to any harm.
