Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / a survey on which raw supplier do you think is the best?
- By dogydogy999 [gb] Date 02.08.09 16:18 UTC
hi everyone:

the following are some raw suppliers selling the frozen raw pet food. what good and bad experience do you ever have with their orders? how about their quality of the meat or bones? how about their price do you think, (for example: as I know the PRIZE CHOICE is more dear than LANDYWOODS.), how your dogs like them?  relative information about these suppliers would be welcomed.

-Albion Meat Products
-Berriewoods
-Prize Choice
-food4-dogs
-ba-ck2nature
-landywoods
-valupets
-poshpawspetfoods
-daf-petfood
-crusaderwholesale
-tpms

thanks a lot for taking part in

I use Forthglade meats, and have been very happy with them.
- By dogydogy999 [gb] Date 02.08.09 16:31 UTC
hi Jeangenie :

you are so fast,  haha```

yes I should put forthglade on the list   thanks
- By Cava14Una Date 02.08.09 16:32 UTC
I have used AMP Durham Animal Feeds and Redcastles of Dundee in the past I was happy with the products and the dogs ate it fine. I now use Landywoods the dogs are still happy and to be honest I like the price better which was really why I changed
- By Tigger2 Date 02.08.09 16:40 UTC
I use Durham or Redcastle, am very happy with the quality from both. Have used Landywoods, good price but not good quality.
- By dogydogy999 [gb] Date 02.08.09 16:46 UTC
hi Cava14Una :

absolutely, yes

I used to feed my dog PRIZE CHOICE, but compared with others, it is really expensive, and the worst is the price changed to a litter bit higher and the mini order rise from £50 to £60 now¬¬¬¬

so I want to try others

thanks

Landywoods, good price but not good quality.

hi Tigger2,  many people said this. really?
- By scarlettwynter [gb] Date 02.08.09 17:31 UTC
Durham here and really pleased with the quality. Have also used Prize Choice and was impressed. The only other one on your list that I have tried is Landywoods and I was far from impressed.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 02.08.09 17:38 UTC
I used to use AMP but it got very expensive, so switched to Berriewoods which was very good. Now I can get AMP much cheaper than Berriewoods so have switched back :) :)

I use Landywood and have done for a few years. The only problem i have had is that the last 2 months i haven't had what i ordered. Have tried AMP & PRIZE CHOICE but the dogs don't seem to like it has much.
Why do you think landywood is poor quality? Not sure who else does raw meat in the southwest, Berriewood dont come over this far.
- By Merlot [gb] Date 02.08.09 18:47 UTC
I get all my meat and bones from a place called Jon Thorners in Somerset, he is a wholesale butchers cum farm shop. It's all free range local and he does some wonderfull minced foods ie, minced chicken and bones, veal, mince and offal, fish, heart etc, but only for collection not delivered. however it's only half an hour from me and well worth the trip every two to three weeks...If I had a bigger freezer I would go less often. He does tripe and bones as well I often get 7 or 8 whole lamb neck/ribs like half carcases for free! He also lets me have loads of chicken carcasses for peanuts.
The only downfall is that he does some wonderfull human food too...like ostrich steaks, kangaroo, and the normal stuff too, they make wonderfull organic pies, Yummy beef and Guiness or chicken and leak. They have a huge selection of cheeses and loads of fresh local fish and game. so it costs me a fortune in human feed!!!!

hi frenzy:

I planed to change to landywoods, but after research, there are many people said some quality problem and order problem as well.(you can search the key word then find the topic on this forum) I have no experience on landywoods.

wow...   haha   that 's so cool.  I have enquired about this with my nearyby butchers , but not cheap

I use AMP/Prize choice.. to feed five/six dogs inc one of our neighbours dogs.

No, they are not the cheapest available, however of the two cheaper alternatives ive looked into - my dogs would not eat the local butchers pet mince (And it stank).. I looked into landywoods as I do every 12 months or so.. as they ARE cheaper.. yet every time i look into it and search a few forums, i find they are having teh same problems they have always had.. ie unreliable deliveries, incorrect orders (usually items substituted for what was ordered) and some have been unhappy with the quality of the meat.

So I trundle on, paying the higher price for Prize Choice because i know it will be ordered when tehy say it will, ill get what i ordered and the quality is consistent (and the nice delivery guy will put it IN my shed for me!) Has to be said that customer service and consistent high standards are worth a lot!

I use landywoods and have done for some years. I found the quality good and prices and they ring me every month to let me know they are in my area.
- By dvnbiker [gb] Date 03.08.09 12:55 UTC
only new to this raw lark for about 2 months.

On the whole I have been using Prize Choice - I dont have a large freezer so can only store about 30 blocks at a time.  I can this from most local places but of course it isnt cheaper although the dogs and cat love it and there is a nice choice in different meats.

Used Landywoods once and wouldnt again.  The quality was fine but the delivery was awful, we didnt get the delivery until 7.30pm and then half the order was substitute with tripe and we ended being overun by the stuff.

I have just put my first order in with Berriewoods of their frozen (have used them loads before) as I love that I can get order as box of 32 and mix the different meats in it so only time will tell how that goes but it is due tomorrow.

No comments from anyone about food4 dogs I was thinking of giving them a go. I have used Landywoods and found them to be a bit scatty. Not always having what you want but delivering anyway with substitue items and not always on the day they were supposed to. Having said that the dogs always loved the food and it is cheap. We have used Durham Animal Foods but our nearest agent is a trip through the Mersey Tunnel away so the cost of this has to be factored into the price. The food from them is good quality and I've always got what was ordered.

I use Berriewoods and they are very good, the food my dogs love, the price though is quite expensive compared to others, but we have tried other brands and for some reason the dogs won't touch it.
Also get a fair bit from our local butchers, bones, carcuses, offal at a cheap price, if only they did ox tripe and we would be fair game.
- By justme Date 04.08.09 10:22 UTC
I've used Landywoods, no problems at all with them just they only delivery monthly, so went with TPMS this time as they deliver weekly, the tripe smells alot more, half was thawed out and the chicken carcasses compared to landywoods are budgie size, oh and my order was missing some items, which they will credit but never had that with landywoods before.

Interesting thread as i really want a weekly delivery
- By helenmd [gb] Date 04.08.09 18:50 UTC
I use Food4dogs Variety mince and I think they're great, reliable delivery,no minimum order and the right amount of meat, bone and offal,I also like the fact you know where it comes from.I don't know how they compare pricewise with the other suppliers but I don't order loads anyway as I feed Orijen as well.I also buy the Prize Choice free flow mince tripe, tripe chunks and heart chunks for a change.
- By goldie [gb] Date 06.08.09 20:57 UTC
I feed prize choice to mine....i cook it...do you all feed it raw or cooked please.
- By theemx [gb] Date 06.08.09 22:33 UTC
Oh raw every time... bleurrgh i bet its horrible to cook! (I do have a weak stomach for things like that though anyway, in fact i cant imagine HOW id cook it... *shudder*)
- By goldie [gb] Date 07.08.09 08:02 UTC
Its the other way around for me...it the raw meat that puts me off giving it to them.
I will give it a go later.
Thanks theemx

S'funny the things that turn your stomach! I just either defrost in the microwave (on defrost, not one of the actual 'cook' settings), dollop into bowls and its gone in seconds (or i leave it out over night). Its not my favourite thing and on a warm day especially if i am pouring hot water mixed with a meaty supplementy stuff, it does make me gip!

I can quite happily sit here whilst the aged Orange job munches and slobbers up chicken wings without a problem though!, but ask me to cook a block of AMP mince.... i actually would vomit!

Hope it all goes well :D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 07.08.09 09:42 UTC
defrosting in a closed Tupperware is my option and then feed and it is gone in seconds.
- By gaby [gb] Date 07.08.09 21:42 UTC
Defrost mine overnight and feed raw next day. Have been known to forget now and again and had to defrost in the microwave. I believe its ok to give semi frozen but I have not tried it. Could be nice I suppose in hot weather.
- By justme Date 07.08.09 21:52 UTC
Vet told me its ok frozen, i have fed half frozen and had no bad effects to try to slow them down eating it.

TPMS let me down badly this week, no food order as their computers were down and the driver had left before they got my order, i emailed them tuesday as requested for a wednesday delivery, so tried them twice first order half thawed out and some missing second order they want to send me a week late, won't be using them again, not reliable, going back to landywoods
- By dvnbiker [gb] Date 08.08.09 17:24 UTC
raw every time
- By tizliz [gb] Date 12.08.09 17:36 UTC
Can I ask on here if anyone is in the Highlands and interested in buying from Durham Foods?

I am trying to get together enough people for a delivery from them.  If you are interested please contact Lee at Durham Foods and let him know where you live.  Or reply to me.

thanks
Claire

Hi
I have been using TMPS for 2 years now and they are great.  A general opinion of Landywoods from people I know who feed raw is that its not great quality but I dont have any experience with them so cant comment personally.
I take the meat out and thaw completely before serving it, but do give wings % bones frozen and they are fine on it. Two very happy GSD's!

I use DAF live about 20 mile away so call in regulary. Place is always clean and Lee gave me a tour of the wharehouse and how things are done. I prefer his minces especialy the lamb venison and rabbit. Also have another meat supply only a few miles away were I get my beef chunks, Heart, necks, Tripe and tongue from all good stuff.Unfortunetly he will not deliver. Also Asda for my chicken wings which is there favourite. Also cheep fish fillets or whole pilchards raw.The dogs are gleaming with health and vitality.

I used to use AMP, when I was feeding 4 xl dogs but when I went down to 1 it was much more expensive as didnt get the higher discount. Couldnt fault their customer service, delivery or big bags of turkey necks, only downside was their minced blocks-seemed to be very high in water content.
but the dogs didnt mind.

Am now using DAF, have been for last 2 years, wouldnt change back to AMP(sorry AMP). Lee at DAF bends over backwards for you, they always arrive on the delivery day. The dogs adore their minced blocks. Only downside is he never seems to have turkey necks anymore.

Like Geordie I live close by and now call in for my order as and when the freezer asks for more.

Barbara

Edited to say-Geordie I've PM'd you
