Topic Dog Boards / General / Kennels? useful or not
- By dogmad1234 Date 01.08.09 10:21 UTC
I am wondering if people use kennels in their gardens and how useful they find them. I have 5 dogs, soon to be 6 when I keep a puppy out of the litter I have just bred. At the moment they all live in the house, but I am wondering whether a kennel in the garden would be a useful investment or an expensive place to store my junk?
I have recently put up an outdoor pen and shelter for the puppies. and my youngest girl seems to like spending time out there when it is open and can come and go but does create if I leave her shut in and I am not around.
I am pretty sure the oldies would not adapt to spending time in a kennel and wouldn't do it to them but am wondering if maybe I couls train the youngsters to like being out there. Might be useful if I go out for the day.

I have kennels in the garden  they are really usefull , sometimes not often people come who perhaps arent quite  doggy people well to the same extent as me anyway and at least they can be put there  , less stress for them and people alike , also when friends come to stay with their dogs  we use them as having 9/10 dogs all charging around can be a pain and alos used when taking in breed rescues , mine love to be out and use them through the day with the door open

im not fond of kennels and would never have my dogs in them, i dont like them and i think a dog should be in teh house, and there is always teh smell, people with 'kennel dogs' dont notice it but its like a gone off pee smell its horrible and you can always tell at shows who is keeping there dogs in kennels. but you do have 6 dogs so i can see why you would like to use them.

we'v got a guy coming to fix up our garden in september (higher fencing new shed new lawn bla bla bla )
he's drawing up some plans at mo to look at as he did a really great job on the womens gardwn 3 doors from me,
and i was going to get a kennel but this was a thought i had when it was really hot few weeks ago as in the night time my dogs just loved laying out side and the weather was so good, i thought id have a large one built so they can use it if they want to on nights like when its nice and they dont want to come inside,

I think kennels can be very useful but each to their own. However if "kennel dogs" smell it is because they are not being kept properly! IMHO.

I used to have kennels with covered runs, that opened into a large open run.  My grooming parlour window opened into the open run and so when I was working, my dogs were still with me.  I'd also put them there if I went out for the day (no security problem with neighbours either side and HUGE fence at the bottom) so they if they needed to pee they could.  Otherwise they lived indoors or in the conservatory when I rarely had undoggy visitors. :)

So I would say very useful and neither kennels or dogs need to smell if they are used and clean correctly. :)

i have kennels as i have 13 dogs, i always have 6-8 dogs in the house overnight and they are all rotated so each stays in and out, my kennels are cleaned thoroughly and they have fitted carpet, i dont think they smell any different. I must add that 3 of my dogs are always out and that is completely their choice, they dont settle in the house at night and the warm weather is worse, they are much more comfortable outside, all my dogs are kennelled in pairs too i would have a single dog on its own.

But again each to their own, whatever suits you and your dogs :)

we have kennels and our dogs dont smell :) only 2 of the dogs are out there alot and thats because they want to :) well i carnt call it a typical kennel with run as its right outside our back door , we have a very large patio fanced off with gate ,the dogs spend alot of time out there playing together (when the weather allows) but 2 of them sleep out there and the other 3 like to be in the house ...:)

Depends where you live and how close neighbors are:

I have a double kennel outside backdoor, but they only sleep in it, and it is used for shelter when I have pups at the needing to have more space and run around outside.

There is no way I could leave dogs unsupervised outside as with lots of close neighbors there is plenty enough to stimulate them, and without the moderating presence of us the chances are they would bark.

So if we are out all dogs are in kitchen with no view to outside.

We have a kennel in our garden, the run is the back garden which is fenced in and leads to our back door which is generally open during the day unless the wind is howling.
The kennel is cleaned weekly and the garden is washed down with disinfectant weekly as well. We have carpet in the kennel plus vetbed.
The kennel doesn't smell and they have the choice to be in or out, top sleep they prefer out as its too hot in the house for a long overnight sleep.
It is handy for them to go when they come back all wet and muddy from a walk, mine go in there to dry off and clean up before coming into the house, if its really bad then its bath time.
I find it very helpful to have, then i do have a more of an outdoor living breed.
