My grooming assistant is planning on getting a boxer puppy hopefully later on in the year when her and her husband have bought a house together. She loves the breed-her mother and stepfather own one and also one of her Aunts. But what concerns her is that both dogs(males) seem to prefer men to women, even though in both cases its the women who do all the walking, feeding etc and are with the dogs most of the day.She says when she sees her mother's(George!) he ignores her to begin with and greets her husband. So she's come to the conclusion that male Boxers prefer men to women and it does rather put her off.So is that a fair assumption or is the whole idea a bit silly?
There seem to be a few Boxer folk on here so I thought I would ask-thanks!

i dont know about your eperiences but male dogs do seem to wont male friend ship where bitches are happy with anyone.
I used to have 5 Boxer girls now only got 4 girls.
My girls go nuts when I come home from work etc.
Can't really comment if the males are standoffish with females.
Most of the male Boxers I know are daft about any human contact.

I had 5 Boxer boys over the years and they were all mad about me

I have had 5 Boxers 2 Males and 3 Girls out of them all one of the girls was a bit scared of men i dont know why as she was bred by us (fine with other half)also bottle fed by 2 males so plenty of male interaction, also plenty of socialising she only diplayed her hackles no growling.

don't know about boxers in general but i have a male 9 year old boxer and all i can say is he loves everyone and anyone. basically who ever will give him attention.
I've no experience with Boxers but my male Mini Schnauzer prefers women to men - he is quite aloof normally but acts like a puppy when female visitors come over. My old terrier was the same - I think he just tolerated me because I fed him!
I've only had one and he loves everyone. He loves my mum the most though as he knows he can walk all over her :) But he also knows that if he wants rough play to go to my dad as they have a real rumble together so maybe the boxers your friend knows favour the males as they play with them more in this manner than the women do - just a suggestion.
My friend has a 10 month old boxer and he is the same - loves everyone and everything!

Our past boxers, the males have been pretty much divided. My mother had a male who was her boy, I had one as a teenage deffinitely my boy, but the male boxer we had when we first got married was OH's boy, even though I had delivered him :)

Hi,
We've got a male boxer who is coming up 16 months old now and I find he will be better with me on certain things and prefer my OH for other things. Rough and tumble with me includes lots of boxer chat and nibbles where as with my OH it is definitely more physical and our boxer jumps all over him and is much more verbal with lots of barking and play growling going on.
I feed him, walk him and do all the general obedience stuff so he behaves better for me but when he has an out of control moment and is going bananas he listens to OH more but I'm sure this is due to OH having loud booming voice and Nero responds quicker to that.
I have found that if I give Nero an inch he'll take a mile so I have to be very strong with him at times where as OH doesn't find this at all.
On the whole he loves us both and goes nuts when either of us come home so I would encourage your friend to get one. They are fab dogs and give so much love and wonderful cuddles you can't help but adore them. They are mad and so full of character but also quite demanding so make sure she is aware of this too, I'm sure her family have prepared her!
Rosie

We have 2 girls and they are loyal and protective of all our family members. But they do seem to have more of a respect thing for my OH..........he only has to give "the look" and they turn into angels............me they walk all over!!!!
Just like kids........im afraid to say that i have on several occasions said to the dogs "wait till your dad gets home"
The important point is to make sure its raised as a family dog and not just one person...........we all have our doggy jobs to do (i always get the messy ones though!!!)
Thanks for all the replies! It does seem like just a coincidence that the 2 boxers she knows well happen to be "men's dogs".Its not her as my dogs all adore her and she is brilliant with the dogs at the salon. At the moment she can't decide between a lab and a boxer, she does know how crazy and boisterous boxers can be,I think thats why she likes them. While she's at work the puppy would spend most of its time with her mother and George so it important that they get on(George is good with other dogs).
When the time comes she will need to find a good breeder but I'm sure you guys will be able to help with that as well. Thanks!
At the moment she can't decide between a lab and a boxer, she does know how crazy and boisterous boxers can beDon't underestimate Labradors - I know plenty of all ages and not one could possibly be described as calm - totally the opposite in fact. They are all black Labs though and from working stock.

Ah we have a 7 months old yellow Lab at our house, he is never calm in or out of the house and just doesn't stop, i get exhausted from just watching him, let alone trying to entertain him for long periods(Fathers dog).
He is from working stock as well..
I have though spoken to a very good breeder of working Labs and she said that there is very little in the past few years in temperament in working and show Labs, she said they are very much becoming more the same dog, as in the show dog is not so stocky anymore, and are more lively. Anyone else with Labs noticed this? Not been watching Labs in the ring, but will now at general open shows to see what she means.

We had Boxers growing up, She was my dad's dog through and through :)
My 5 year old Bitch Lab can easily keep up with my 10 month old Vizsla puppy she has always been a busy Lab and still is!!

My boy is my baby, he adores me (I adore him too) he also adores his daddy.. my girl is a typical daddies girl, just like my daughter.
But seriously , Boxers love everyone who is willing to give them the time of day... as with all dogs, some will favour one person over another, some just love everyone
My sister in law has two male boxers, and one favours her, while the other favours her husband. Perhaps coincidentally, it's the entire male that favours her?

I have 1 dog and 2 bitches, they love anyone and everyone alike, no preference - if they can get a fuss and cuddle, that'll do them just fine. All 3 are equally affectionate with me, hubby and my 3 sons, not noticed any difference. Love em all to bits :)

I agree with most people, they tend to want a fuss from any one who'll give it them lol but MY boy makes more of a fuss over me than he does with my BF and he hates it ha ha! Where as our girl does her own thing and isn't too bothered :)
Hope your friend enjoys a life of flouncy bouncy lovely gorgeous boxerness hehe

In the words of the song.......
" Love the one you're with".........the Boxer philosophy :-)
They are just like people and have different preferences but commonly love everyone..sometimes loving them a little bit much
