Hi
If you are mating a bitch on exactly the right day for her, then one mating will be sufficient. Stud dog owners generally offer 2 matings to offer a better chance of conception, should the bitch be not quite ready on the day she was first mated. As to when you will know if your bitch is in whelp, then an experienced vet will probably be able to feel any pups at about the 3 week stage - you could also consider having your bitch scanned at about the 4 week stage. If you haven't already bought it, I would suggest you go out & get yourself a copy of "The Book of the Bitch" by K White & J Evans - this book is essential reading for anyone contemplating their first litter & gives lots of info on the signs of an in-whelp bitch. I hope you also have an experienced breeder to advise you later on eg the breeder of your bitch or the owner of the stud dog - they should be only too pleased to help you if its your first litter.
