Little bit off topic, but back home in Sweden, for as long as I have been alive there has been a phenomena referred to as "summer cats". Families will acquire a kitten at the start of the summer holidays (and kids in Sweden get 10 weeks off, most working people get all of July off, so most families move out to the countryside for at least a month each summer, sometimes the full ten weeks) -the kids will play with the kitten and have fun. Then comes the middle of August and school will start again, the families have to go back to their flats in the city, decide they can't possibly have a kitten living in a city flat, so they just leave it behind. Argue that "It's a cat, it will fend for itself". It happens year in and year out, half grown kittens abandoned -and not being feral, the majority will starve to death. People can be so horrible. :(

When I lived in Corfu, the same thing used to happen to puppies. Greek families from Athens would come over to Corfu for the school holidays, acquire a puppy to play with for the children. Then as the holidays ended the puppy would be abandoned, often taken up into the mountains where it could "fend for itself". If it had survived it would more often or not be shot or poisoined befor the tourists arrived for their holidays. To make matters worse this process was repeated yearly. I must say it was one of the main reasons that I returned to the U.K.
