LOL, I've never found another dog owner whose dog does this - I thought it was only mine! I have a Patterdale Terrier (similar to the border but black, smaller, and less amenable!), and she bumps against things when she is in a playful mood. It seems to be a signal that she wants to play, similar to a play bow, but she also does it when she is impatient to get a move on - if I'm standing still chatting when we're out walking, for example. She has been known to bump strangers legs when they're passing too! She's never bumped my plant pots, as far as I know...........
My husband has nicknamed her Bumpy, for that very reason. I doubt its anal glands.....if they're itchy, they'll do something really obvious like skid across the living room rug on their butt. :)
And no, I don't think its a sexual behaviour either - my dog does rampant humping, given half a chance.
I'm sure its an invitation to play, albeit rather a dominant one, as LucyDogs points out.
