Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / how much discharge?
- By Rubysmum Date 23.07.09 04:28 UTC
My girl gave birth on Wednesday. she seems fine in herself and is feeding the puppies and eating and drinking well. but she does seem to have an awful lot lot of browninsh discharge. When she gets up it has soaked into her hind quarters and into the vetbed and she seems to pass some clots when urinating. she does try to keep herself clean but there is really too much for her to clean up. I have washed her down several times. This is my second litter but I don't remember her mum producing anything like as much.

It varies, especially with how many pups there were as ti is to do with where the placentas attached to the uterine wall.

As long as it isn't smelly (as in infection) then it is OK and may go on until after pups are weaned, but will gradually lessen.

I have had the same bitch have copious discharge with one litter and very little with another.

Not smelly at the moment. Just loads of it and very messy and soaking into her fluffy britches and tail. Her mum only had four puppies whereas Ruby has had 9 so presume that will make a difference.

Oh yes.

I found Lidl cloth baby wipes (the sensitive no fragrance ones) invaluable for cleaning up, they are a good size and thickness and under £1 for 80.  Boots have a special offer on theirs at the moment BOGOF for £1.49, but they're not as good as the Lidl ones.

I do use baby wipes but too much discharge for that at the moment. have had to wash her down in the shower today as it was getting too bad. Lets hope it slows down soon.

Thanks, The vet has checked her this morning and says she is Ok, her lymph glands are up slightly but her temp is normal and vet can't feel anything left inside. She is eating and drinking, but she does seem to be moving very carefully as if she aches.
Vet didn't think she needed antibiotics, just said keep an eye on her.
