Topic Dog Boards / Health / Thoughts and Prayers WORKED....I AM SO HAPPY

Ok, gonna start this off by saying that little miss Reba, tore her own cast off Saturday night.  In the time it took to let two puppies out (hadnt even got the one dog out of the car yet, we had just gotten home!) she tore her cast off (still in one piece, still having the bandage attached to her chest and the end of the cast.....still not sure how she managed that one).  Her leg was raw, and the poor little girl was so uncomfortable.  Took her to the vets, they resplinted, and told me to follow up with my regular vet during business hours.

Last night, I would have thought that cast was gonna come off again.  She was whining, scratching, trying her hardest to get it off.  Rang the vets this morning, and had an appointment made to see her (she was supposed to go tomorrow, to get xrays and splint change, etc. but just bumped it all up to today)

WELL

Got the xrays done, and her leg is almost completely healed!  Its healed enough to have the cast off, but we still need to be careful as she has no muscle tone and she could easily break it again.  Right now she has a support splint made of popsicle sticks (the vet is very clever!) just to help build the muscle up, but not to put to much pressure back on the leg.

The leg is completely straight!!!  And she seems to still be able to move proper at the wrist (where the hackney action comes from).  She may still be a show dog after all!!!  I am so happy!  I was in almost tears because I was so happy.  This has been a long, stressful thing, and I feel like I live at the vets (they even commented that I live there, and I am now family LOL)

Now we are just having to treat the sores, and infection she has from having the cast on (they think she is allergic to the tape just like her mom!)  But once that heals, I dont think anyone would ever know she ever broke her leg.

SO HAPPY! I could do jumping jacks if I didnt have bad legs myself!

YAY YAY YAY YAY!!!  And YAY again if it wasnt clear that I am happy LOL

Thanks so much CD for offering healing thoughts for Reba throughout this process.  YAY

Excellent news! It seems to have come good despite Reba's best efforts to scupper the process!

Oh yes, she tried really hard to have things her way.  She wasnt too impressed when the support splint went on, but in a little bit I imagine she will be able to get back to normal, and play with toys like she wants too (right now I hold them for her as I dont want her to jump about).

Just got word from my vet that she is amazed that it healed so well.  Normally, she says, a dog will rebreak the leg within the first couple weeks with the cast on (from pulling on it, jumping, etc) but I kept so on top of it, her healing, that it has healed so well.  She is surprised how straight it healed, and how quickly.

With this, if I thought something just wasnt right, straight back to the vets I went.  A few people have said I spent way to much money on fixing this leg, always going back to the vets to get it checked if I thought something was off, but it definately pays to stick to your guts, and not listen to everyone else.

I have to do physio on her leg, but I am not sure how to do it, so I will be making another appointment with the vet to have them show me how I am supposed to work this leg out.  I dont want ANYTHING to go wrong, and I would feel horrible after going through all this and have something happen to it now.

Oh, she has gotten her support splint off 3 times so far!  Sneaky thing!  But even her sores look better, that the cream is really helping her.  I just keep putting it back on, as soon as I notice she has managed to get the splint off.
