Arrgh, Bronte has a habit of running straight at me, into me directly, or worse, broadsiding me and knocking my legs from underneath me. She sometimes misjudges the stopping distance required and other times just heads straight for me, ears flapping, oblivious to me making frantic "slow down!!" hand gestures and swearing profusely. I've not helped in occasionally allowing my fear at being taken out yet again to propel me at speed away from her in a vain attempt to climb the fence to safety - which just makes her run after me in hot pursuit. I feel like a bullfighter trying to avoid her charges.
She thinks its a great game but its becoming quite scary now as she's 9 months old and massive!

Any thoughts?

I suppose I should be appreciative she has such a great recall - when I'm sat on my backside trying to remember my own name for the 3rd time that day.

What about teaching her "down" from afar????   You could then, hopefully (if you can judge her speed right :0) ) get her to drop down about 10 ft in front of you ........ or is she too enthusiastic for this????

Otherwise - might I suggest a pogo stick for you? :d

could you not teach her some commands so she knows to stop near you.
why not teach her 'wait' or 'stop' and then she has to stop and sit when she gets to you then she gets a nice treat to eat. you couldpractise this at home at first but calling her and making her sit every time then treat her, hopefully she will soon realise that the onlyway she gets a treat is by sitting by you when called. once she's good at this in the house do it in the garden and then on walks but only let her go a little way from you to start with so she doesn't have chance to build up to much speed. if she runs and doesn't slow down and sit ignore her and turn your back.
i use this in a slightly different way with my dogs by calling them back when we're out walking and i always expect them to sit for a treat before their leads are put on. they know if they don't sit calmly there will be know nice piece of cheese for them.
don't know if this helps but it's worth a try. have you been to training classes to practise recall as they can teach you to get your dog to come back and walk round your back then sit by you.

Ha ha ha. Oh dear tip a great dane trait. Its a game. Not funny if your the recipient however. :-(

Just get used to the bruises, its all part of dane ownership!! What colour is she? if its a Harlequin, get used to years of endless dodgems!!! :)

Parcival (blue merle) broke my ankle whilst indulging in that "game". Not very funny when you are the one in pain and the dog tries to slobber your face. ;)

Carla does indeed have a harly ha ha. Ive only ever had harls so i dont know any different. Altho it does depend on the dog itself i have 2 complete nutters and 2 calm placid ones Who would rather have 2 leisurely stroll.

Yep - she's a harli. I have a blue dog, who is a saint in comparison and a little old lady brindle who could do it if she wanted to when she charges at speed but has the manners not to try and kill me! lol

That's not a description I'd ever have expected you to use about Willis!

Maybe Willis is a saint now Bronte has come along.
My Inga was the puppy from hell until Sengi arrived and from then on in Inga was an angel.

> why not teach her 'wait' or 'stop' and then she has to stop and sit when she gets to you then she gets a nice treat to eat

I use a 'wait command'. Buster isn't one for running around much, but he does bull-doze his way around, if he is going to bull-doze through a doorway with somebody allready walking through it (not enough room for Buster to get through without knocking the person over) a 'wait' will have him stand still, untill he is told 'go on'. It saves people gettting bowled over :)

It's such a versatile command and is also used when Buster is out on his long-line and I spot loose dogs/people heading in our direction, 'wait' will have him stand stock-still untill I catch up with him (much easier to get him to wait under distraction than to re-call as he can carry on looking at the dogs/people, so I don't have to try to compete with the distraction) and get him on a short lead. It is also fantastic when going up a hill in muddy, slippy conditions, as I can send Buster up the hill on his long-line, say 'wait' & he stands still like an anchor, so I can pull myself up the hill using his long-line :-D
Also used when he finds something interesting to eat while on a walk, 'wait' will have him stop & wait, he'll then get a treat instead of whatever manky thing he has found (cooked chicken carcass being my worry - why do people chuck them over thier garden fences?).
I also use it to stop him mid-whatever behaviour I don't want him to be doing, as it's so ingrained him him that if he 'waits' nicely I'll give him a treat.
'Road wait' is for him to sit & wait for the 'cross' command at the side of a road ('road' replaces 'sit' as too many people telling Buster 'sit' by repeating the command, has taught him he doesn't allways have to sit, I'm the only one that says 'road' so he knows it has to be an immediate sit, no questions asked, LOL )

I would be lost without the 'wait' command.

ETA Wow, what a long-winded ramble that turned out to be, sorry all!

I know it's a serious problem with such a big dog but the mental picture really has me sniggering! Sorry!!
