I haven't posted for quite a time but I have silently been surfing round the posts. I apologise if this has already been posted elsewhere.
We are heading to the Outer Hebrides next week for 2 weeks and are planning to do a bit of walking. Not sure what the midges are going to be like but I'm going prepared with midge repellent for me and hubby but I'm not sure what to do about Cooper - obviously wouldn't use any of our stuff on him but wondered if anyone had any experience if he started being irritated?
check with your vet but you may find its ok to use anti-midge/fly stuff for horses on him (there are loads of different horse ones!) Chris edited to add, citronella stuff (anti flea) should also help
We went to Isle of Skye a couple of years ago and sprayed our dogs with a citronella spray, they didn`t mind it and they smelt lurverly, it didn`t do them any harm but then it didn`t really keep the midges away either lol
Nothing to do with the dogs but I found this site www.midgeforecast.co.uk very useful, they give you a midge update : )
I've just come back from Oban & have suffered the midges (they love me!). I didn't use anything on my 2 dogs although they were Frontlined before we went. Reggie the daxie did scratch a bit but nothing major & Hoaby the springer with his long coat didn't even notice them. However the ticks where more of a problem. Hoaby had to be brushed thoroughly twice a day to check for ticks & we removed 1 or two from him every day, despite the frontline.
Avon Skin So Soft is the best thing for midges. We were recommended it for the dogs (and us) when we were up in Scotland. I've never actually tried it myself as we tend to go to Scotland in the winter now, but we have some on hand in case we need it.
Thanks very much for the replies. I've got a couple of bottles of skin so soft from our last camping trip that I found was great for us although wasn't aware you can use it on the dog. Must say he hasn't really been bothered in the past but I'd like to be safer rather than sorry.
