Topic Dog Boards / General / Spotty chin!

My boy (Boxer) has a spotty chin, he's had the odd spot in the past and just with the normal cleaning I do to him it's gone away but over the last week he's had a boom of spots and they're bleeding a wee bit, mainly due to puppy hanging off his face me thinks, I have tried to stop her as he just lets her do it!
Plus the added heat over the last 2 weeks i think has made him at bit more sweaty and damp on his chin with slurpping more water *euw*

Anyways before I ring the vets and end up getting the old fuciderm of them (i'm sure this is what they'll give me) is there anything else you guys can recommend? I've put some sudocrem on it to try and heal any of the scabs but it hasn't really got rid of the unburst spots.

Cheers :)

Clean with Hibiscrub, dry well and apply hydrocortisone 0.5% or 1.0% available over the counter at pharmacy.
This heals it up in days.
Many people worry that steroid creams and ointments can make skin thin. But the research on this is not clear.
In general, it's best to use the lowest strength steroid that is effective and stop when skin returns to normal.

Thanks Tooolz, I knew I could rely on you :)
Are both ok to be used on the burst spots? They are half scabby & half open

My flatcoat has had exactly the same, and yes, it is aggravated by a puppy hanging off his face too! He had to have a course of antibiotics as it was so horrible, but it cleared up beautifully and thankfully has not reappeared to the same extent, although is still a little bit spotty. Puppies are a nuisance, the owner of the litter brother of mine had to take her bitch to the vets due to their puppy hanging off her ears! :-) I was more worried about the older one injuring the puppy, not the other way round, lol!

Yes smear it thinly on all spotty bits, it doesn't sting.

A course of antibiotics may kick off other repercussions you may not want-  so try the steroid cream.

My dog had these and they went by themselves after a few weeks.  I used sudocrem spread thinly as you have done, and just tried to keep his chin dry.

The problem is Gemma is probably in the middle of a busy showing period with her dog and clearing the spots up quickly is more likely with meds.

Oooops didn't realise! :)
Gemma - In that case, you can get hydrocortisone really cheaply at the chemist especially if you buy their own brand - I have done this for myself when my own chin went scabby (after going skiing and my scarf irritating it).

oooh yuk..how quickly did it clear it up G?
I often forget that I could use it on myself :-)

Thanks guys :)

I already had some hydrocortisone in because I got stung by some beastie last week whilst driving & my leg turned into a giant rashy messy horrible sore.

Yep your right Tooolz I'm in the height of show season untill the end of September now. Razzle was actually looking forward to having the cream on today, bless him he's such a toot!

It cleared up in a few days but was not a pretty sight until it did, I think the freezing cold weather delayed the healing too as it kept getting even more chapped.  Yuck indeed!
