Hi

I am going to breed my beloved bitch (small utility breed) but a little unsure on things so I thought I would ask.
I have found a few studs which seem to be perfect one is just on stand by incase my poppy rejects him.
One of the owners has said that poppy is to go to them and if they dont stick whilst we are their she can stay over a few nights to see if anything happens also it supposed to be best as the male performs better in his own home. But another has said that they are to bring the male to us as poppy has to feel at ease in her own home. I am getting confused as being told two seperate things from reputable breeders.

The usual scenario is that you travel to the stud dog owners but stay with your female whilst they mate.  Personally i would never leave my female at the stud dog owners house, surely there is not a reason to do this?  If your female doesn't want to mate with the stud, it is possible that it isn't the right time for her, in which case you would have to return another day, or she doesn't like the stud and if this is the case then i would never in any circumstance's force the mating.

i agree with wendy, bitch always goes to stud dog house, and i would never leave my bitch with stud dog owners for any reason, we used a stud dog once that did not like being watched while he sewed the seeds of love, so the stud dog owner and myself went indoors and watched from there, until he had mounted and then we would quietly go back out to assist if required, and i would never ever false a mating.

The breedings on both my bitches this past December, the stud dogs came to stay with me.  Got two litters out of it.

When Casie was bred before, she stayed at the stud dog owners house.

Although it is very common as well to travel back and forth with your bitch to the stud dog, over a period of days.

Depends on what arrangements you want to make.

Whilst it is usual for the bitch to travel to the stud, circumstances sometimes makes it better for the stud to go to the bitch.  For instance, if I have pups at home, I may not want a visiting bitch in the house, so would be happier to take the dog to the bitches house (presuming distance not too far)  Or if a bitch is unsettled away from home it could be better to do the mating at her house.  Thing is, there are very few hard and fast rules, it is all about what is arranged between the dog and bitches owners.  This goes with post we often get on here about what is the norm for stud fees/pick of litters/free returns etc.  It is all down to arrangement between the parties involved.

As you have seen either way is fine, the important bit is the right stud for your girl, and you work that around whichever way is best for both parties. :-)

The stud I use used to travel over (quite a long distance away) with his owner to stay with us until the deed was done, I used to pay all travel expenses and put them up for a few days and then pay the stud fee, it's the way I liked to work as it gave my girl and the stud time to get to know one another and for it not to be quite so clinical.

The most usual way is for the bitch to visit the stud at the correct time, but either way works fine it depends on your situation and working around your lifestyle.

It may be a breed or trust thing, but it has always been usual for the bitch to stay with the stud dog if possible.

To be honest  it isn't unusual to have the owner of a male travel to the bitch either, especially if they don't have facilities, perhaps they have other males and no seperation facilities.

I have boarded/overseen matings of both stud and bitch to help the respective owners.

traditionall the bitch goes to the dog but there are often reasons why it can be the other way around and there is nothing wrong with this if thats the case. However I would never leave a bitch somewhere to be mated, I would just go back several times.

As you can see from the replies so far, there is no hard and fast rule.  Like Brainless, I often have bitches come to stay, but they are from people who know me and trust me.  And I am used to handling maiden bitches.

If the bitch owner isn't experienced, and doesn't know what to look for, I usually ask if they would like their girl to come to me early on.  My boy is experienced, and will play and fuss, giving the novice bitch chance to "make friends" if you like.  He doesn't tend to pester a bitch until she is ready.

So we all do it in the way that suits.

I have always travelled to the stud dog. Both times I left my girl with the stud dog owner. However, on both occasions I knew and trusted the dog owners. I would never leave my bitch if I had not seen all around the dog owners property and seen the other dogs. On both occasions both stud dog owners had shown me around without question. I saw everything and both had very professional set ups. I was very pleased and all of the dogs owned by the stud owners were happy and healthy! I was even fortunate enough to see a bitch with her pups and the set up the stud owner had which gave me a few ideas on my own set up!

I would leave my bitch with the stud dog if say he was in Scotland (I'm in London) as I wouldn't be wanting to make the drive every other day 2 or 3 times, and I mightn't be able to have the time off work. And of course if I knew or my friends vouched for the care my girl would get - my dogs are pets first, show dogs 2nd, and breeding stock 3rd, as DW said this week! Luckily I'm in a numerous breed and can find a suitable dog rather nearer to home!

I have taken my girl to a stud ..and after no tie's (and my bitch staying over ..and i hated every minute and went for her the next day..lol..)The stud dog owner offered to and did come to mine ( we are about 2 hour's away on a good day).. I suppose it depends on the people really and firstly the bitch , as it made no difference to my bitch she would not mate with him ...

They say the bitch chooses 'her' dog and I agree, I chose a lovely Champion dog first time, he was stunning, in cracking health and a really good example of the breed standard. We travelled 180 miles and back and she just was not interested!!!!

This time we have tried a different dog, again a stunning dog and in excellent health and a good example of the breed standard. 10 mins togehter and they were at it!!!! :-)
