Topic Dog Boards / General / RSPCA accused of cover-up over death of vet's dog
- By mastifflover Date 06.07.09 10:18 UTC
A vet left his 2 dogs in a car for 6 hours, in May 2007. The dogs were rescued from the car, but the 9 month old couldn't be saved :( The RSPCA have been accused of covering up the death of the dog and being to leinient on the vet.

Story here.

If the RSPCA can rule that the death of one of the dogs, is an accident, because the day was overcast, the car windows were open and water was left for the dogs, surely it means that nobody can ever be charged for thier dogs dying in such situations? I do believe that the vet never intended to kill his dogs or intended to cause them suffering, but as a vet he really has to know the dangers of leaving dogs in cars , nomatter the weather, as it's the temperature in the car that is the problem, not the sunlight.
I thought neglecting your pets welfare was an offence in itself, leaving a dog in a car and allowing it to get so hot it dies has to be neglect doesn't it?

I agree mastiff, dont think anyone intends to kill their dog, but to me it is simple common sense (a trait i feel many are lacking!) and why would anyone take their dog out in the car if they knew they were going somewhere they couldnt take the dog??
If im visiting friends i take the dog in with me, or dont take him at all. I'd NEVER leave him in the car!! The only time he has ever been in the car on his own is probably a maximum 5 minutes when i've had to dash into the shop on the way back from a walk to get something & that has always been in winter. If it is summer and im desperate to get something i will drop the woofer back first then go out again to get it. It means 2 trips but the happiness and wellbeing of my dog is paramount so its worth it :-)
Every year we are warned about leaving dogs in hot cars and every year people still do it and dogs die. there must be countless others that were left in cars and became ill from it but didnt die that we dont hear about.

Wish people would wake up and use a bit of nouce!!!

Agree 100% my OH takes JAke with him every day but if its hot he stays here in the office. I never, ever leave my dog in the car. I leave them at home when shopping, and we never have them in the car visiting, its more like we do not visit if they do not want the dogs.
BBQ tonight dogs are coming, if my brother has the three grandchildren visiting we tend to leave the dogs at home for the dogs sake rather than the children as they do not leave the dogs alone. It is not good enough to call baking a dog in a car an accident! if it was a child you would be prosecuted! How is it an accident! forgot they were there? what? its at the very least negligance and at the most criminal.

Leaving a dog in the car with windows open and access to water on a overcast day isn't so bad, the owner did think about the dogs....HOWEVER why were the dogs in a car for 6 hours????

Did anyone watch Top Gar last night?  Clarkson, Hammond & May all had a little competition where they sat in a closed, turned off car in the sun for as long as possible to see who would get out first and be the looser...they also showed us the tempreture of the car.  I think it is nearly 70C that Clarkson held out to then had to jump out due to discomfort and there were only in for minuets I think.  Of course they could get out when they felt uncomfortable, a dog can't, but it really does prove how quick a car heats up....

It might not be so bad, but why take the dog if you intend to leave them in the car??
