How American have we become. Our eldest son Joseph has his school Prom tommorrow to celebrate leaving school. It will be a night to remember for him but the cost to use has been huge. Not really complaining much, but when did we start doing this. When I left school quite a few moons ago we just left. Now they have a prom, trip to Alton Towers and much more. I think I am probably a bit sad as well to think he has left school, seems like only yesterday he was born. We are so proud of him and and take pride as to how he has turned into a wonderful young man.

The new headmaster at my son`s school has just banned all Proms and Alton Tower trips as of September this year! He will also be stopping all the dress up days that the 6th formers used to do for charity, which is a great shame.

How lovely for you to have a boy who has made you feel so proud.I hope he and his friends have a wonderful day and most importantly a wonderful future. :)

we had a sixth year ball when we were leaving, so effectively a prom. it was expensive i'll admit...but really worth it, it was a lovely way to say goodbye to the school and some of your friends.

Quite a few schools have been doing prom night for a few years now, I love it! I used to always feel a little upset that our children did not get that same prom that the American's get so I think it is a good thing, my eldest had his prom in a beautiful hotel and it was wonderful to see the limo's all pulling up and everyone dressed like film stars.  Yes, we are such sad parents we went along with some others to watch them all arriving and video'd it, :-D then left them in peace to have a fabulous time.

That is very sad Lisakom that your new headmaster has stopped it.

I wish there was Prom when I was young.

Hope that Joseph has the time of his life daisysmum and it's great to feel so proud isn't it? :-)

It is ...and it means that my youngest son will never experience what his 2 brothers did at their Proms...They had a fab time and both arrived not in Limos but in a big yellow road sweeper!

Nothing sad about that, I went to both of my lads just to take photos, then like you left them in peace, they had theirs at Drayton Manor :)

My son has just been to his prom. Its the first one theyd ever had at their school and so, my girls had all missed out. He looked so smart and I was so proud of him. We took him to his friends who he was taking. He bought her a corsage, she had been to the hairdressers and had this adorable ball gown on a looked stunning. I realised my children were growing up and was soooo proud. We went to the venue to see the children arriving, it was a beautiful sight, some arriving in parents cars, some clubbing together and arriving in limos, one on a horse and cart, and one even arrived on a tractor!  I have to say, I think proms are a wonderful idea, its not often we get our kids looking so grown up and stunning in this day and age. The teachers all lined up outisde to welcome them in and it was enjoyed by one and all

Oh...and NO trouble!

Silly headmaster he needs a does of fun!!! , school is not only about academic learning wher would our kids be if they didn't have some fun too and the prom's etc bring so much fun and memories for the students. As some will have read from my post in may my daughter had her prom ,yes it was costly, with all the dresses the limo and beauty appointments !  but that is down to individuals the kids looked fantastic so elegant and grown up. The phot's were worth every bit of the cost and stress as was the fun they had.
They are hard work to organise (I was part of a small team of teachers who organised them at our school )but it brings everyone together
Maybe your son's school could have the parents arrange something separately -- big job but it would be worth the effort and maybe the head would be talked round.

Oh yes and as for trouble ?  no -- and the school is not a posh upclass private school completley the opposite
infact the hotel praised our kids for their excellent behaviour and invite them back each year
