Topic Dog Boards / General / Whiskers.....
- By Fleabag Date 17.06.09 14:15 UTC
I know groomers often remove whiskers for showing etc but wondered about people's day-to-day habits.  Do you keep your dog's whiskers intact or do you trim/pluck them?

Does it make a difference to the dog's abilities in any way?

Just curious.

As the face of my ACS gets shaved, the whiskers are shaved off too. All our other dogs keep them though. I like them!

I personally wouldnt take the whiskers off unless there is a good reason for it, i.e face is shaved for show, or to improve the outline of the muzzle. Personally I leave them on apart from some of the old boys when they start to curl into the mouth etc, or if one is broken/damaged, (or been nibbled which is usually the case in this house!) I think they add character, but then it is personal preference.

I got Whis back with no whiskers he looked so funny, we keep them now! I only trim if they start poking out at odd angles or in his eyes, Jake is au naturel!!!

Same as Vera, my Yankee's whiskers are shaved when I do his face. The Cavaliers I just do any whiskers that are growing up towards the eyes.

Why would you have to take them off to show? I would have thought as whiskers are a normal part of a dog that it wouldn't be a problem - you can tell I don't show my dogs :-)

My breed keeps its whiskers, even for showing.

I don't think I've ever seen a whiskerless dog ?

It's pretty common practice with my breed in the states as it probably is with others. I don't remove my dogs unless they have one that is going in the opposite direction to the others as it spoils the look.

(Having a poodle) my dog has his muzzle regularly shaved so i never see his whiskers :-)

LOL now that is open to misinterpretation!

I meant the whiskers on a dog's face!  lol

Thats what I'm talking about.  Sorry, Back, side.  Those on the back of the cheeks :)  I leave the won's on the muzzle.
