I have just read the saddest but most uplifting story in the daily mail. About a lady who rescued a street dog from Thailand and brought here back to the UK. What a selfless woman, abandoning her romantic break and propsal from her partner to bring her 'Rama' back home with her. Although Im sure she would have brought All the homeless dog back with her if she could. I know i would have wanted to. Its heartbreaking to hear that they 'cull' the street dogs in Bangkok, like they are some kind of vermin. :(
How nice it is to see some good stories about dogs and responsible, caring owners instead of just scaremongering stories of vicious breeds :)

It's lovely to hear of such an act.  I am going to search for it now and have a read.  :-)

It is indeed a lovely story that left me with tears in my eyes.

However - and sorry if this sounds curmudgeonly! -  you can't help thinking that we have quite enough rescue dogs here in the UK without people thinking what a heroic thing it would be to rescue them and bring them back here. Would the £5,000 to save one dog have been better spent neutering - or horrible thought, humanely destroying to avoid the less humane cull - a large number there?

Have seen the same thing locally and there seems to be some sort of celebrity status to these cases. Not sure what the answer is really. Don't know whether to press 'post' or not ...

I support the SoiDog Foundation they do a scoop & neuter on strays & also provide other veterinary treatment. Some dogs/cats are rehomed both abroad & in Thailand & there are several Temples where they help the monks feed & care for the animals.

I first got involved after the Boxing Day Tsunami & their achievements are incredible.

The Thai's are Buddhists & do not"cull"the dogs/cats directly, but they do put out poisoned food & do not all treat animals correctly

My partner and his parents helped for many years dogs in thailand, and did alot of neutering however some times it's fairer to just cull.  It's horrible but having seen pictures of what they saw and dealt with was horrible.  The volume of dogs they would get neutured in a day was amazing.  The vets were fantatsic (Met the main one when I went over, lovely chap, basic equipment everywhere but if he was in the UK my dogs would be with him!)

Sometimes it's not fair and at one point the government un-did all the hard  work done with the temple dogs.

Bringing just one dog back doesn't do ANYTHING.  It still leaves many entire dogs and bitches mating and having puppies.  Such a sad state of affairs.

And it's not just the strays.  Puppy farming is a big business over there, pedigrees go for alot of money (in comparison) but these dogs end up chucked on the streets.

Partners parents had 15 dogs at one point living with them, they moved up north and took 7, then brought 2 back to the UK with them, one died, one PTS as due to age and health and others rehomed with friends.

You have to remember it's compleatly different over there and just finding a dog and bringing it back off the streets takes away a home for a dog in a UK rescue. :(

It's still a nice story :)

Have to agree with LilyMc here, there are so many dogs in rescue in the UK why not rescue from here.  Says me someone who imported a breed from another country :d

I'd be worried re. diseases etc. for a dog which is a stray in such a country also.

That looks great MM, just the kind of thing that will make a valuable long term difference. Have just made a donation.
