Hi, does anybody know the rules about having a dog in the car in France? Like does he need to be caged or do we need a divider?
We intend to have him on the back seats as that is how he is used to travel, plus boot will be well full with luggage... He is used to it as I drive him with me to work every day 1hr each way, he stays calm and totally safe to us. Car seems to have a dozing effect on him, dozes off at speed and looks out of the window in traffic, no barking, no moving around...
thank you!

People that had a pup from me several years back, actually took her to France for a month, caravanning, last year. I feel sure that they said she had her own harness and sat on the back seat.

We carried 4 goldens around last year in the motorhome. One sat on the back settee looking out at the drivers most of the time. No-one ever stopped us so I am presuming all was okay.
I don't know about france but i thought it was a legal requrement to have a dog secure in a car? I thought it had t obe secured with either a harness, crate or dog guard these days?

It's not a legal requirement over hear as such but there is something that if the dog is not secure you can be fined for and for the life of me can't remeber what....
Well I guess if the dog is jumping around the car or cause a distraction to the driver then it would only be fair for a fine to be issued. I wouldn't even feel at ease if ray was to hang his head outside the window as it could cause a cyclist or biker to startle...
I will look into an harness-seatbelt. We got him one when he was smaller and didn't know how he would take to the car, but we could never work it out!!!! The other thing is we want him to be able to change position as often as possible because with his dysplesia he gets stiff very quickly...

The Car Harness I have (ancol) allows the dog to move around a little. We used it for quite along journey (nearly 3 hours) and she was fine.

Regulations are as much for the dogs benefit as ours. In the case of a collision if unharnessed a dog would fly around the car and cause damage to himself and others. The type I have used look just like a normal harness and come complete with a handle with a clip that attaches to the harness. Your normal seat belt is threaded through the handle. Does allow some movement, they can sit up or lay down and even turn around all beit on the spot.
