My 14 week old pup has always got car sick and we have gradually been working through it and it seems with the latest addition of a sheet over her crate in the back of the jeep she seems to settle down straight away and is much better. Still lot's of drool but no sick since we used the sheet (people must wonder what on earth we have in the back under the sheet lol).
The other thing she has frequently done is do a number 2 in the crate, often just after we set off. She gets no food before we go out and give her toilet time before we go. I'm pretty sure it is down to anxiety that she does it, but last night she was lying down and seemed quite settled. We only went about 3 mins up the road she and did a poo on the way. So we stop and clean it up. Then on the way back after our walk, she does another one!
I get rid of the sick and now I have poo, oh the joys!
Anyone had problems with their pups / dogs doing this? Is it a stress thing or perhaps the motion of the vehicle makes her feel like emptying her never empty bowels?
Thanks
Rhiannan

Hi!
Murphy (now 6) will poop the second he gets out the car, I have always put it down to the excitement of going in the car. He's always done it. (Touch wood) he's never done it in the car. When Maddi was little she would be sick, always in the most awkward of places, but only in my car which has very hard suspension, she's great in the OHs car.
No real advice, just my experiences, someone will be along shortly with info I'm sure :-)
I wish the other halfs car had a hatchback (it has an enclosed boot so we can't put her in there!) as we could try her in there, I think the jeep being high up doesn't help towards her travel sickness. OH's Audi is much smoother. Plus I'm starting to get fed up of my jeep smelling so disgusting all the time lol
thanks
Rhiannan

One of my dals used to vomit and poo in the car when she was a puppy. She was a real sight as we arrived at ringcraft each week! But she grew out of it, thankfully.
That's good to hear they grow out of it, some people have told me that if they are sick in the car now they will always be sick in the car :(
It is a nightmare, just going 5 mins down the road you end up having to keep pulling over and cleaning up so she doesn't stand in it and get it all over the crate and herself!

Sometimes dogs never grow out of being carsick - my old labrador didn't, and if we planned a car journey she could never be given breakfast that day - but all the other carsick pups I've had have grown out of it by a year at the latest. The one who pooed as well was fine by 6 months, so with luck Bailey will be the same.
I hope so, it's hard word. We want to be taking all over the place to socialize her with as much as possible and we feel restricted to where we can take her.

It varies from dog to dog. My Toy Poodle had a lovely vomit on the passenger seat the very first time I took her to ringcraft. She never did it again. My Border Collie was so stressed the first time he went to obedience classes, that my jeans were soaked through, and I'm not exaggerating, I felt as if someone had thrown a bucket of cold slime on me.
He took months to settle down - so I don't think you can have a hard and fast rule. Years ago I had a Yorkie bitch who sang all the way through a car journey!

My youngest retriever hated the car for the first few weeks...sick,wee, and poo.
She was caged for a while on the back seat, not nice with wee running out. As soon as i put her in the boot with other retriever everything stopped straight away like magic.
Now i cant keep her out of the car...she loves it.
