Topic Dog Boards / General / how do you keep dogs away from bitches at season time???
- By Romside [gb] Date 04.06.09 11:13 UTC
I have recently had a pup of mine come back to me who is a year old as the couple have split and its complicated ect.he was entire so i had him castrated two days after letting him settle back in with us.the thing is my bitch was on day 10 of her season and my male is very good and will obey when asked to come inside when i put her outside for toilet ect ect.if you get what im saying, however year old male has been a blooming nightmare, bless him.ive had no one who could take my bitch as mum and dad are on holiday with family so ive had to keep three dogs all seperate and its so unfair on the pup(year old male).i was wondering how you all work your males and females when the season hits.
do you have dogs who live in and out or do you just put up with the constant whinning?
my male is normally very good and only moans every now and then but the pup coming back has made him obviously feel like competing, ive had no bad feeling between them in fact they get on really well but i was just wondering how you guys all do it best.
i dont want my dogs to live outside completly but would it be ok to build him a real nice room with heating/air con, (for winter seasons) for him to stay in at the bottom of my garden so it takes away most of the problem?
i know a dog can still smell a bitch in season for miles but i do feel for him at this time its so unfair on him.
any help would be great thanx.x

Keeping dogs with bitches in season can be a nightmare, unless you have a suitable facilites to keep them and the scent completely separate.
IMO the kinder way to deal with the situation is to put the male in a different location.  If friends/family can't help, then it's boarding kennels.  Having said that, I couldn't do that to a dog that's used to living in the family/pack which is why I've never kept dogs with my bitches in 25+ years of showing and breeding.

This is the very reason I will not keep a dog. I have bitches and much as I would love a nice lad I feel it is not fair and I have not got the room. I know lots of you manage and have no problems with it it's just not for me.

When a bitch is in season in our house we put up tall baby gates at all of the doors splitting the house into zones rotating the dogs throughout the day so that they all get to go in the garden, the carpets were removed and the floor bleached/ cleaned everday; however this is not a lifestyle for everybody and as we now only have one bitch that comes into season it only happens twice a year.

Living with an entire dog is an absolute nightmare when a bitch is in heat, and the best bet is to see if sombody would take him while she is in heat.

P.S- you can get a bitch spray to cover up her smell, dont bother using it as the dog will associate that smell (usually lemon) with a bitch in heat.

I use cages, and keep them separate at all times. I have tried putting my dog away to relatives, but he just stops eating. I don't trust kennels (sorry) well enough to look after a bitch in season so won't let any of the girls leave home. So I just have to be extra vigilant and put up with the noise for the few days he whines. ;-)

We have a utility room and swap my bitch and my dog in and out so they each get some time on the sofa with us. During her final week when he goes completely mental, he goes to stay with friends as it's not good for his heart to get so overwrought, poor boy!

Surely they could still mate through a stairgate?

There is usually a room between them so no accidents can happen

well normally id send him to stay with my parents for two weeks which he loves and my dad takes full advantage of the time as walking him gives him time to get outta the house lol..it works out great but dads recently had hip replacment so they have spent the time hes off work to go visit family across the country and my boy has no where eles to go as my sisters are complete non dog lovers and couldnt possibly have him(wheres the key for a huge roll eyes lol)and the auntie who WOULD HAPPILY take him home has a parrot who troy is petrified of.:-D

so kennels are out of the question,(my personal preference sorry)and at the moment so is family.but right now its the two males doin my head in.both boys are whinning, but iu have to say she must be going out of season as its been much calmer today.
i just wondered if it would be nice for him to have his own little paradise where he can go at the bottom of the garden.im having the salon built so an extra 8ft by i suppose 12ft.....like a kinda summer house would be big wnough for him wouldnt it? i think ill look into that you know.both boys could live up there and keep one another company while the season is about.of course im home 97% of the time so it wouldnt be lock them in and leave em to it!
hmm, i think ill look into it.thanks for all replys.x

When we bred Cher and Casie, we had 2 different males here at the same time (and here I thought the bitches went to the stud, not the other way around LOL) All dogs were put in crates and had blankets over 3 of the sides (so the front door was still showing, but the rest of the sides were covered).  It wasnt bad, unless their girl went past the males crate.  Usually just said "Not today Sonny/Chopper" and they would settle down.  I dont know how it worked, but it did!
Looking at keeping a male from this litter, so dont know what it will be like to have one here full time.  But I know my Aunt has two entire males, two intact bitches, and its not so bad unless the bitches are let out of the crates and go past the males crates.  Even when its close to breeding day.  So I guess what I am saying is, crates can be your best friends when you have an in season bitch with an intact male.
Just want to point out though that each dog got seperate house time, play time, cuddle time, etc.  And all were used to being in crates at the dog shows, so crating them for longer worked out ok.  Not the most ideal, but it was ok.
