Hi, I've just realised why my bitch is off colour, I'm pretty sure she's got mastitis, but can't get her to the vet until the morning. Does anyone have any suggestions which might make her more comfortable until then.

I'm worried, although she's still feeding pups. They are 3 weeks old today and in the process of being weaned.

Poor thing, I've had a warm compress on it for about an hour and put a larger pup on there to feed but to no avail. Am running out of ideas...

Any advice?

no idea if this works on dogs but i know for women putting cabbage on the breast works.

Warm compress and keep massaging and expressing the teat..

I have heard cabbage does work with dogs.. Tia had severe mastitis in 5 teats , I tried the cabbage,, dont know if it would have worked or not.. she ate the cabbage :-D

Its worth a try though..

Massage butter into her teats the salt is absorbed and breaks down the sour milk,
it was told to us by our vet and does work.

Wow, I had no idea about the butter... or cabbage, will try that... thanks!!

Anyway, I took her temperature and it was 40.9, so called the emergency vet and had to take her down there. Not worth taking a chance with a temp like that! She's had antibiotics and painkiller so hope she'll have a good night. Would not have been able to sleep worrying about her otherwise.

Feel like I've been through the wringer what with 9 pups and sick mum... good job they're 3 weeks old now and starting to be weaned... takes a little pressure off mum.

Back into vets tomorrow though, I think she needs a thorough check up, the vet tonight said her uterus feels a bit tender... hmm, something else to worry about!!!

Anyway, thanks for your replies, I pray she'll be on the mend in no time.
