Have you ever heard of group B strep? I think that this is the clinical definition of the parent group of that form of infection. If I am correct it comes in group A, B, C and G though group B strep is the one that you hear most about as it causes problems in neonatal babies. From what I remember it is something that we carry naturally in our bodies that causes no problems if it stays where it should.

There is a more precise definition on this page:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streptococcus

Hope that this helps

Can I just caution about wikipedia?    Not all the information posted therein can be guaranteed to be correct - anyone can add to definitions .

Far better to go to somthing like www.vet.ksu.edu/DEPTS/dmp/service/serology/Streptococcal.pdf - 100k where you will get genuinely knowledgeable information.

I couldn't agree more. Wiki is fascinating but should be taken no more seriously than the 'Boys' Book of Knowledge, 1954'.

I did check several other medical texts first, but the information was presented in a format that may have been confusing to the OP and the wiki entry confirmed - albeit in a simplified format - what they said. I didn't want to post a link as I had an entire thread deleted for posting a link to another site.

You posted a link to another canine forum which is not allowed - it is however perfectly acceptable to post links to informational sites as many members do. In most cases it is better to post links rather than to quote big chunks of text due to copyright issues.
