If you haven't found anywhere else, I have an eye testing clinic coming up in June it is on the 30th which is a Tuesday evening clinic. 5pm to 9pm. The panelist will be Professor Peter Bedford.

We are in the Mabel Parkinson Room Haddenham Village Hall (just off the A418 Aylesbury to Oxford road).

Failing that look in the dog press Our Dogs or Dog World for more information.

Polly,

Can i ask do you do all breeds of dogs and at what age do you start eye testing and is it a yearly thing?

The only reason i ask is that i am interested in eye testing my dogs, its another thing to check and measure and feel people in our breeds as with many others should start doing it and was thinking about getting mine done.

Hi Sue,

I have been running annual eye testing clinics for the last 28 years! :-) I have three eye testing clinics a year, February, June and October, so that the breeders and owners can if they have more than one dog spread the cost and the number of cars and dogs they bring to a clinic. We also run an evening clinic so that people who work during the day can get their dogs seen, and they do not have to give up a weekend either.

We welcome all breeds and depending on the breed of dog we can test pups as young as 5 weeks and as old as they can get. It is especially important for us to get as many people booking this year too as the KC are attending our sessions to monitor what happens. You can download to your PC a copy of the eye testing booklet from the BVA web site, which explains all the main eye diseases and which breeds are affected by which problems.

If your breed has not been or is not on the BVA lists for a particular condition, (i.e. flatcoats are not listed as being affected by PRA or HC but we do test for this every year), then it is still ok for you to get your dogs tested, although the results will not be printed in the KC Breed Record Supplements.

We found a few problems which need sorting out before the 1st January when a micro-chip or tattoo will be complusory to get a dog eye tested, hip scored or elbow scored.

Polly,

Interested in your post. My Scarlet has Glaucoma and has had her right eye enucleated and the left is being treated by drops. Do you have any experience of the time frames that may surround the left eye becoming affected. It seems to be something of a lottery and I have done tons of research, but am interested in real experiences.

Thanks

Sue

Hi Sue,

I have no idea re time frames. I could ask Peter when I see him what the time frames are. I would assume from what I have heard that it would difficult to pin point a time frame anyway, depending on the speed of deterioration or the eye's ability to drain off the excess fluids.

Is glaucoma known to be a problem in your breed? If so there may be other people out there who could have the answers and experience of dealing with the outcome who may be more able to help you.

Regards
Polly
