Topic Dog Boards / Health / Howling after GA

My little Treacle has just had a GA for some surgery. (Some lump removals for biopsy, Sorry a bit raw at the moment for more details.) We got back from the Vet 30 mins agao (I always stay and help out with ops so home within 1 hour from her waking up) She seems very comfortable but is crying and howling. Never had this before, after an initial mutter they usually nod off and sleep after a GA. The op went well and it was a nice GA No problems at all. Anyone else had this...or any vet nurses out there who can tell me if it's a normal thing. She is howling less now but whining quite vocally. I am sitting in the office with her in her favourate place under the desk..others are the other side of the baby gate. Just wondered if she would feel better if I let them in as usually they are all in with me if in the office, but I wanted to give her some piece and quiet.

I was told by a friend whose husband is my vet and she used to help at a Vet surgery prior to meeting him, that the reason that Vets often don't let the dogs go home quickly is because they can howl etc. and the owner often gets very distressed and worried. Also Treacle is only a baby isn't she so she could have some discomfort and can't manage it the same as an Adult. If it were me I would let the others in for comfortas long as they just lay around i can't see what harm that could do (not an expert by any stretch) but that is what i would do.
By the way, hope everything is okay.

Hi Alison No Treacle is my second oldest she is nearly 7 now!! She is slowly starting to settle now. I was not too distressed as I know she is fine, but just wondered if it was common. Thanks for your reply.

Seemingly it is the GA and some dogs react to it more than others. Hope all is well and that results come back good. (They're all our babies though aren't they!!)

I am afraid the biopsies are a shot in the dark really. Treac has had some intermittent lameness in a front leg for a while...x-rays, pain relief, etc..not found anything but a very mild bit of arthritis in one shoulder. (Elbows brill for a 6 year old still!) Anyway I was grooming her a couple of weeks ago and found a lump in her right armpit very deep up under her shoulder blade about 4 inches by 2 inches. Thinking I had found her problem I rushed her off to Vets, this thing was not there two weeks ago but suddenly appeared. We did some fine needle biopsies and they came back with secondary cancer cells. We have today been all over her and removed 7 lumps from her back, mammery, and tail areas. Only small lumps (Size of your little finger pad) and they have been biopsied before and returned as fatty tissue. The Oncologist has suggested getting them out as it is vaiguely possible the primary is there somewhere but unless we can find it we cannot 100% identify the cancer and therefore have no protocol to treat by. The huge lump under her arm would involve major surgery and would not help find the source so it is to stay. I have lived with this for the last 2 weeks knowing we are going to loose her and it's tearing me apart. Even if we were lucky enough to find the primary because it has already spread to her lymph nodes we are very limmited as to any treatment. Chaemo is not really and option unless we have a primary and even then the outlook is not good. To gain her some time in the long run would mean making her poorley now. Ron and I are not prepared to do that. We would rather she had the best now and we lose her sooner, rather than making her miserable now to gain a few weeks later when she may feel rough. We have opted to do one GA and get as much information from it as we can and then see if we can help her at all. Hence all the biopsies in one go, along with x-rays etc..
She is well in herself and still eating and wanting her walks. She does not seem uncomfortable with the big lump and is on regular pain relief for any pain she may have.
I am strugling to sort it out in my head still. I have now been in touch with those who needed to know so am telling you. I have tried to find out if any reserch is being done that we may be able to help with but unbelievably for a breed with problems there is nothing.
She is a wonderfull girlie, gentle kind and never any trouble...my "Invisible" dog, she ambushes people for cuddles and sits on thier feet to keep them stroking her.
She has now settled and is fast asleap.
Thanks for letting me ramble. Rest assured we are doing the best we can for her comfort, and will moniter her so very closely.
Aileen
Sorry for the long ramble, it just all came out and I needed to talk! You CD'ers are so good at listening. Send her all your healing thoughts...it seems nothing else is going to help her.

Oh Aileen, I am so so sorry. I really understand what you are going through as I lost my wonderful soulmate last year with lymphoma. We did do the Chemo route and I have to say that she was well apart from some upset stomachs which they pre-treat with tablets. There are cancer diets so do look into them (Hills have one) it is just so that the cancer doesn't have the food that it thrives on. I cannot say if they work well as Shola was hard to feed as she was prone to upset stomachs anyway so we had to be very careful in her feeding as something new could upset the balance very easily. There are online support/help groups available and when you get the diagnosis it may help to join them for some ideas and advice.
It is the hardest thing in the world that you are going through and I really feel for you both. Feel free to vent any time you need.

Thanks folks.
Just to say Treacle has just had a light supper a drink and her pills then went out into the garden for a little saunter and a wee. She is much happier now and though looking like a patchwork quilt seems not to be in any distress.
Aileen.
