Any suggestions would be most appreciated on how to stop a puppy barking.
what is happening is we have a caravan on site for the season and hope to spend some time there over the summer.
at Easter we took our three  older dogs and the puppy there. The first three days puppy was
fantastic .the older dogs have caravaned all their lives and never been a problem
They each have a cage set up in the awning as they travel in cages and are used to them
on the fourth day  puppy suddenly started barking and no matter what we did he wouldn.t stop
we were coming home that day so not too bad.
But this holiday he is now nine months old and he objected to going in the awning from day one the trouble was because we don,t want him to spoil any one elses holiday he soon realised we rushed to him as soon as he barked so he was getting our attention.so if he didn,t want to do anything we had a barking session .Any way he had now decided he would sit in the boot of the van watching the world go by. After his walk at lunch time he then decided he would  go in the awning.and was okay all afternoon. At teatime again after his walk he decided he would not go back in the awning  and we have spent the entire weekend trying to keep him quiet and swapping him around trying to find where he would settle with out barking.and that seemed to be lying on the floor between my oh and me. but if one of us went out of sight he barked. Now the little monkey came home tonight and went straight into the cage he sleeps in at home no bother and he is fast asleep there now and not a peep out of him. We want to take him on holidays with us as he is part of the family but obviously we have to cure his barking for our fellow campers sake who I have to say have all been very understanding of our prediciment. He  has also started the habit if I am speaking to some one and he is being ignored of barking to get their attention. Of all our years with dogs we have never had a vocal dog like this one so we are running out of idea.s of how to stop  him barking. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

well, im sorry but i dont blame him! being caged all day and night, except for walks must be awful, especially for an active puppy! i would never cage a dog once its house trained anyway. wont he stay near you if you let him out?

I don't read this as that he is being crated all the time he's not on walks.
I take it he has the option of laying the awning area in his crate or not, doors open.. Maybe i've got that wrong..

Was it windy or was there something else new going on on your last day when he started barking? Anything could of upset him, or could be something over night which scared him not to want to be in the awning area on the last day.
Is there anyway of setting up an awning in your garden with his crate in the area and see if he will settle and work on this with praise and treats?

Have you tried putting a long lead on what we always call a 'spring'.  It is the corkscrew shaped spike you screw into the ground then attach a long lead to it for him.  All caravan club sites have a 'dogs on lead' rule on site and these springs seem to work well.  Maybe if he was on the lead some of the time between walks, he would be happy to go back in the cage and awning the rest of the time.  Just a thought! :)

Thanks for your suggestions.
no he was not confined to a cage  all the time.
he was on a lead  beside my OH as he sat beside him reading( as the onlead rule applies to our site too)
But he barked if one of us moved out of the awning.or even into the caravan
all we would like is for him to be caged through the night on holiday and when we  could not give him our full attention as at the moment if not watched he will be up to mischief. We have had the breed 38 years and we have travelled thousands of miles to dog shows caravaning over the years and never had a problem with any dog untill now.and was just hoping some one may have a solution we had not thought of.He is okay now he is back home so the problem is obviously with the awning  he is not a nervous dog.but we are wondering if because he is in a different enviroment he is scared if we are out of his sight. just a thought.
The reason he sleeps in a cage through the night at home is for his own safety because he is a very mischevious puppy and also very distructive  and I would rather get up to a happy caged puppy than a dead one.

so how would he kill himself overnight?

Oh so many ways Tina, especially with a large breed.

There are electrical wires and equipment, the Fridge to Open and raid, bins ditto. etc etc

IN a holiday situation there is also the real danger of him chewing his way out of a caravan or awning and escaping to get shot by a farmer or killed on the roads etc.

i would think the whole experience is exciting and scary for your pup all at the same time and he finds it hard to relax not being in his home territory. The only way i've ever used to teach my dogs not to bark is by positive re-enforcement.
This means your going to give your full attention to watching the pup and looking for signs he's about to bark. I use treats and keep them in my pocket, watch the dog and as soon as you see someone walking near or another dog etc call your pup to you and tell them to sit, then give a treat.keep their attention until whatever has passed and then carry on. this gets them used to not barking at things and after a while they will ignore the things that used to set them off.
This can take some time so don't give up, if needs be your have to keep it up the whole holiday but as the pup gets used to the caravan etc i'm sure he will settle. I also say 'shhhhhhhh' in a quiet voice when i treat so they learn to associate that word with being quiet.
hope this helps but as everything it will take time and patience.

The light and the sounds must be so different in the awning, maybe if the light is bright or dappley he doesn't like it or if the wind is making a noise that gets him worked up.Maybe your husband, while he's reading, could move his chair next to the cage, open the door and have a lead on the pup while he's in there, just to make him feel that he can get out if he needs to,but he's also under control.
